For this game, you need to come up with a word that isn't commonly used anymore. All you need to do is name the word and give the definition. It would be nice if you could use it in a sentence, but that is not required. Have fun finding these words!

I will, of course, give the first word.

hassock - a thick cushion used as a seat or leg rest

Hassock was one of the vocabulary words my children had when I homeschooled them. I'll never forget the definition my daughter came up with to remember the hassock. She defined it as "a cushy for my tushy".

What words can you come up with that are not commonly used anymore can you come up with?

codswallop

Hiram Codd, the inventor of the Codd bottle, which was commonly used in the late 19th Century for fizzy drinks (Codd's wallop).

The word in the UK came to mean talking rubbish, in the USA talking trash.

I haven't heard anyone say codswallop since I lived with my grandparents.

Davenport, although it isn't used much anymore, is a word with which I am familiar. I love to read. Maybe I've come across it in some books?

Codswallop is a word I have never heard. Thanks for the history of the word, Linda, and thanks for acquainting us with the word.

Anyone else know a word that isn't commonly used anymore?

sitzfleisch

Sitzfleisch is the ability to sit through or tolerate something boring. It is also the ability to persist in a task.

Sitzfleisch is what enables writers to finish a book, a story, or an article.
