Nat, Sorry about your otos, even without much personality, they add to the environment of the aquarium. I tend to only give wafers as supplements and it keeps the amount of pooping down. They are always up on the walls or on the gravel eating away.
Sometimes they just die. I'm really glad Nebbie is doing ok!

hi Nat. sorry about the Otos. I have not had much luck with them living long, except in one tank with lots of plants and one paradise fish. But I never change the water in that tank because it's really just a planted tank, and the water is filtered that way. maybe they are super sensitive to change. I don't feed them wafers at all. they do great with algae and food pellets.

yeah, i think they are way sensitive for me right now...i just wish i didnt get them. i hate when things die in my care. maybe when we move next year ill have a bigger apt and i can get bigger tanks and try different fish and such. we always had a plecostamous when i was growing up...they seem really hardy. tho i cant remember my mom ever cleaning the whole tank. i think she just added water that had evaporated and did a ph and chlorine test...hrm. one time we had mollies and one gave birth. it was so cute. i wonder if pet stores buy fish from regular joes? are you gonna sell your fry to the store, emg? i think live bearers would be a better investment for me, the fish killer. lol

in a weird way i'm kinda glad i'm not the only one having a hard time with ottos. sadly both my ottos died after my bettas came down with something, though i think one just starved. not sure though becuase he was so big for an otto i thought perhaps old age? then about the same time all of my shrimp dies too ('cept one real big one). i had moved them all into the 2 1/2gl tank with the frog and snail, kinda like a refugium. since i can't have them in with meds, moved all plants in there too. it had a nano filter on it so thngs were running smoothely, i make a simple water change and in the morning my lil' girl tells me the shrimps are dead. so we fed them to her gold channel snail. i really felt bad, cuz i liked them all and they all were in my care. i don't think it was a PH disaster since these were algae shrimp and they're pretty hardy about that. *shrug* i've just decided not to buy any more friends until all fish are well and the 10gl is cycled.
ENJOY!!

Mel, Sorry to hear about your losses. It does hurt when they die. I fed my ottos cauliflower and I don't recommend it. They ate some, but it showed through their tummies -- eew! They seem to really like the wafer bits I give them. I've had no success with shrimp at all, so I leave them at the pet store now. I've put all my frogs into one tank with one otto for now. I'm hoping the belly up one will stop freaking me out like that! He lays on the bottom, belly up, and then moves upside down. Weird little frog! I turn him over, and the next time I look at him, he's flipped over again. But he's still alive, somehow. :rolling:

oh...actually, I did loose one....the green female..but that's ok...she was looking pretty tired lately. I have no idea how old that fish was either.
I expect that Patriot won't be hanging around much longer either. His colors are very pale and he just lays on the bottom of the bowl. I have considered just putting his bowl in the freezer to sort of help him on his way...we'll see..he tries to pop up to the top when I come over, but he just can't do it...what a trouper!
