I'm new to knitting and after making a couple of basic scarves, i'm now trying to knit a cardingan. On the left front panel the instructions say " work 7 rows in rib" I got that bit :) Then it says "8th row- rib 7, leave these sticthes on a stitch holder for left band". Do i literally transfer the stitches away from the needles onto the holder? It goes on to say " rib to end" Does this mean i then carry on knitting the remaining stitches from my left to right needle? but what do i do with the stitches on the stitch holder? im soooo confused. i just cant visualise it!

Yes that is exactly what you do put those seven on a holder - to be knit later with a separate ball of yarn. Then you knit to the end.

Just to be safe, what pattern are you working on? Maybe I have or can get a copy and can help more.
Thanks

Dear MargeKnits, Thank you soooo much! Apologies for the delayed response- my laptop was in the repair shop. After reading your post, i went through the pattern again (Patons Contemporary Classic in DK Book 3746) and realised that the band is does separately. Thank you again, N

I started to knit after some time and I do not understand the pattern which should be : basic pattern:" stocking stitch (one row knit, one row purl), then one row purl, one row stitch." It means: one row knit, next row purl, and what then ? Thanks for help. S.-O.

Welcome Olina
Are these instructions for a pattern that's available on line? Perhaps with that information, we could look it up and be of more assistance. If it's in a book, one of us might have a copy.

I came across pattern instructions on a yarn wrapper that was similar to what you posted. I couldn't make any sense of it and then I noticed the yarn was from China. I think the person who authored the instructions was as well. Some things get monkeyed up in translation.

Hello Icp012586, thanks for response. The pattern is from Germany (included in the bag with yarn). The instructions are for jumper (long sleeves); The main design are "plaits"; 5 of them on the front part of jumper. What I was asking is the bit which goes on the left and on the right of those plaits. Logically I would say it should be only stocking stitch (i.e. 1 row knit, 1 row purl and repeat). I will look if it is online. Olina

If you can't find the instructions or pattern on-line, you can send me a private message with the full instructions. I'll run them by my Mother-in-Law. Her Mother (from Germany) taught her to knit and she may be able to figure it out.

What you refer to as a jumper, we call a sweater. I think plaits are the same as cables. So I am clueless, but them I'm a newbie at knitting. However, my MIL is the most experienced in my family and being German might help.

Please try again. That's happened once before, but on the 2nd try it came through just fine. Send me a "test" one to say Hello. I'll email my MIL to let her know we need her help.

Scratch that - I got your email and it has been forwarded smile
