Several tributes from academic and other sectors of society were this morning delivered at the funeral for the late University of the West Indies (UWI) professor Barry Chevannes at the UWI chapel.
Professor Chevannes died on November 5, at the University Hospital of the West Indies, two months after he was admitted.
On Friday, the government posthumously conferred the Order of Jamaica on Professor Chevannes in recognition of his contribution to the country.
Professor Chevannes, a sociologist, lectured at the UWI for many years, and was a leading activist for peace in Jamaica.
He was also the chairman of the Violence Prevention Alliance and a founding member of Fathers Inc, a group which encourages fathers in their roles.
Professor Chevannes was also chairman of the Institute of Jamaica (IOJ).
