I've been trying to find a spiritual advisor in my area with no luck at all. I want to fine tune my abilities and learn how to use them but it seems like it is impossible to get anyone here with the proper know how or even tolerance. People either laugh at me or look at me like I'm crazy so when it comes to my gift I'm pretty much shut off and I feel less like I can use it anymore.
As a young girl I always felt a connection to the spirit world and could discern good from bad presences in a room. Now I feel cut off from that. At one point I was able to tune into my abilities as an empath but now it is as if that is all gone. Can one just lose these abilities and connections and if so, how do you get it back? The lack of a proper spiritual advisor to turn to has left me sad. I'm happy with life in general, but want my abilities back. I miss them.

Have you checked with the local Spiritualist and Theosophist Temples to see if they run development circles?

sunshineallie, have you tried meditation? I have spoken with many people who feel as you do. They seem to find help when they "enter into the silence" and focus on their needs/desires.
Following are some excerpts from a book I am working on -- I hope it helps you in some way:
Often, in silence is the only way to hear. One sometimes must quiet the mind and push away any outside noise -- in order to listen to the silence and eventually the inner voice, which is one's spiritual guide. Doing this will give one the answer needed.
Often we struggle for days, months, even years, seeking something that is missing in our life. Even after attaining what we had always wanted there may still be a void. A yearning for some unknown desire keeps tugging at our hearts. We may feel lonely at times, even when we are surrounded daily by loved ones. We may not understand what this loneliness is or what causes it. This is what I call "Spiritual Unrest".
If you feel a void in your life, I encourage you to seek your Ancestors, explore your heritage, find your spiritual path, and grow spiritually.
For one to be healed physically, the spirit of that person must be healed -- and this is where the spiritual leader, medicine man, or medicine woman will begin. This simply means that in order to be healed, one must obtain harmony and balance within body, mind and soul. One must also have the desire to be healed and the belief that the healing method will work -- if the belief is not there, then the healing may not work.
In all walks of life, in all cultures, there are born leaders or wise men/women. The Native Americans call them Spiritual Leaders or Holy Man. Some of the greatest Spiritual Leaders in history were or are Native Americans.

Thank you both! There are no such places in this area to check with. I have, however, tried meditation. I meditate often. There are several aspects of my life that I would like to correct but over all I'm happy with it. It is as if I'm channeling negative energy that I've not been able to get rid of.
One example I'm able to give is with my daily affirmations. No matter how positive they are and how confident I am in them, the exact opposite happens. What gives?

I am a spiritual coach and I often hear the same things you are noting. In your daily affirmations, do you protect yourself before saying them? One way to do this is to focus on a healing and protective light around yourself.

I will try that. Thank you. I was starting to think that I had some sort of black cloud following me.

Also check your feeling of self-worth. On of the best ways of doing this is saying them in front of a mirror and seeing how you feel what your reflection is saying. Also how are you wording your affirmations?

I'm very clear with my affirmations. One example, "today will be a positive productive day". Shortly after my day goes down hill fast. I'm not even using them right now.

Certainly sounds like something is happening internally or externally. Use Phyllis' suggestion of the protective light and visualize yourself having a positive productive day. It helps to engender a positive feeling within yourself that flows out like a spring or fountain keeping any negativity from gaining a hold. Other things you can do is expect good fortune, avoid inflexible habits, and develop awareness of positive opportunities
Hope those ideas help

All of these suggestions are certainly worth trying. I'm going to work on it. Somehow I have to shake this feeling that I'm broken. Not emotionally but spiritually. This may be a bad example but it is as if I've been struck with ADD of the spirit.
