While sugar substitutes can be great, especially for those with diabetes, I personally believe it is better to substitute with a more natural sweetener, such as raw sugar or agave nectar. Then slowly ween yourself off of the need for adding sweeteners to your food and drinks. Eventually your body will stop craving sugar as much and you'll be healthier for it! Sugar substitutes are a new creation and we don't know what the long term effects of using them can be.

I think that is great advice, Grace. As a diabetic, I really like sugar substitutes, even with the potential long-term health risks. For typically healthy people, the natural sugars would be better for their bodies, but for diabetics sugar is sugar.

I should slowly wean myself from the sugar substitutes. Gosh, although I don't have a sweet tooth, per se, I do love sweetness in my food and cooking. I'm finding that as I age, however, my body is beginning to show signs of a lifetime's worth of not-so-great diet and exercise (or lack of!)
