I really don't get it sometimes. Why people get so stressed over such silly stuff.

My son stayed at my parents half of last week while I was in CA so they went out and let him pick a pair of new running shoes which he needed.

I truly appreciate that and so did my son but now that he's home he hasn't been wearing the shoes. I know my son and when he doesn't wear something it means he doesn't like it. The shoes look like they don't really fit his foot that well and I think they're not what he expected.

So big deal I thought I would ask my dad for the receipt and see if maybe we could exchange them for something he will wear. Makes no sense to just have a pair of $80 shoes just sitting there.

Well my dad flipped out and said I was influencing his decision and he started going off on me like my mother usually does (totally not like him and felt really bizarre).

If he didn't choose the shoes then I don't see why this was such a big deal to him. Maybe he's having this kind of reaction because my mom is going in for heart stent surgery on Tue.

I just find it so bizarre that he almost had a heart attack over a pair of shoes he didn't even choose. Makes me feel terrible because I always get along with my dad. I'm not looking forward to this weekend's visit at all.

Why does family have to be so damn stressful. It is by far the most stressful part of my life and always has been.

Aw Monica, (((hugs))) that sounds so stressful. Maybe it is just because he's having trouble dealing with the fact that your mom is going to have surgery.

My husband can be a BEAR when I'm not doing well, and it's because he's worried.

I think that's one of the easiest ways to tell people are stressed out - they flipped at the silliest things.

When my husband's brother passed last Spring, we had to stop to get my daughter some shoes on our way to the funeral. Her feet had just grown so fast, and she literally had nothing to wear but big fuzzy boots or gold glittery flip flops to the funeral. My husband was insistent she had some nice shoes.

My daughter threw a fit at the store, telling me, no, screaming at me how mean I was to make her get shoes. Finally, after much MUCH turmoil, we found some shoes, but she yelled that she hated them, and she'd never wear them again.

Later that day, after everything was over with, she commented on how she loved her new shoes eek

I realized (after the fact) that she was simply upset about her uncle and the funeral.

Stress makes people crazy.

Deanna,
I agree. Stress can make people act truly out of the ordinary.

Ms. M. I'm feeling the pain on the whole family thing.

Monica - I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I agree with Deanna that he was releasing stress. Maybe not in a healthy way, but in the only way he could at the time. I've definitely seen people do that before - be stressed about one thing and then blow up over something else as a result.

I would find ways to just let everything he says roll off your back for right now, and accept that he is just in a turmoil right now.

Thanks guys. You are all so right. I really feel for my dad right now. We all love mom but he is really struggling with her condition and is facing the reality that he might lose his partner sooner that he would like.

My mom was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2003 and the disease is progressing pretty quickly now. It's really taking it's toll on him.

I should probably do something nice for him tomorrow and say sorry about stressing him out more.

BTW Deanna thanks for your story.

Hi Monica. I am with everyone else on this one - if this is not normal behavior for your dad, then chalk it up to a stress reaction. I am sorry your mom is progressing so fast. That's got to be just as hard on you as your poor dad. hugs sweetie.

Thanks everybody. My mom had the procedure to determine whether she needed the stent and after an hour they found no blockage of any kind so they are not inserting one and she's recovering from the procedure and should be home later tonight.

My dad was a mess! Finding all kind of things to nitpick about i.e. the [censored] old luggage bag my mom used to pack her things. He is having a really hard time with all this.

The rest of us are fine, thanks for asking. My son and brother were teasing her about how she's a borg now. They are such nerds but she was laughing so all is good.

Hey ms. I'm glad that things are a little better today. I'm so happy that things went so well with your mom! That is great news! Hopefully your dad will calm down a bit, I'm sure it's his way of masking his worry. People react in different ways when they're worried about a loved one.
