If we start with the full price, at $420/yr for me that's only $35/month. Even just the 4 yoga classes a week I take would normally cost more than that at any drop in center around here (they're usually $10/session), never mind the yoqua classes, aqua aerobics classes, full fitness center, and so on. So I consider it quite a deal. So it's even a better deal with all the discounts. Right now I'm only paying $120/yr for me - $10 a month. How can they possibly be paying the yoga instructor enough, with that as my payment, never mind everyone else?

We're on Fallon! It's the cheapest plan in Massachusetts I think, we went for frugal.

That's weird. I just figured they were all pretty consistent. In San Antonio (I lived there for 13 years) YMCA prices were about NY prices and here in Tucson they're still too high compared to other gyms sliding scale or no sliding scale they are still too high.

They pay their trainers $15 an hour too. What is up with that (not that I would ever want to work there or anything but that's just cheesy).

lisa, gyms make their money from people signing up for a year and then never showing up. It's like how video stores make money on late fees.

Lots and lots of people sign up for a year and then go to the gym a handful of times. So if someone goes four times a year, they are then paying about 100 dollars a session if it's the original price you mentioned.

When i worked at a gym I saw this all the time. Actually i've worked at three gyms. People would just buy a membership and then never use it.

So true Jill. They bank on people not ever going. I find it so crazy that people sign up and then never go but it happens all the time even with p.t.

People would buy a $1200 package and then use half and some would never finish (this happens more at big commercial gyms). I wish I had money to burn like that!

We make it a point for everyone to go at least once during the month, but (except for this month) we all go 2-5 times a week, it's pretty much covered.

When I belonged to a gym called Ladies of America (if one could call it a gym) it was $36 a month (for just me) for a few machines and a handful of classes. I would go for months without going because there really wasn't a lot of variety. In fact, the LOA we went to closed up after a couple of years.

That was a waste of money!!!

Jilly...lol...video stores and the library used to make a MINT off of me always returning things late. Fortunately I work at the library now so my late fees are waived. smile

When I lived in Rochester, the YMCA's in the city had a different price then the surrounding (still Rochester) areas. the YMCA's that I've seen down here also have different prices. It could have something to with location and clientele.

I absolutely agree that if you pay for something then you should use it. It's the same with anything in life. If you buy a car and then it sits in your driveway and is never used, that would be a waste too!

The difference, Lisa, is that the car dealership doesn't care if you drive it or not. But with a gym, they make a lot of money from you NOT showing up and using the showers/steam room/lockers/equipment. Less upkeep and more room for the people who do show. Imagine how crowded a gym would be if people actually used their memberships. smile

I am really happy with having my own gym equipment. I would only go to a gym for classes or the steam room. Everything else I have right here in the comfort and quiet and sanitary conditions i prefer. smile

It depends upon the kind of gym you are joining. I have paid $20 for acquiring membership and now i will pay $15 monthly. I suggest you to join gym which has large equipment which will help you in your regular exercises.
