I suck it up and pay - I am a cheese freak. BUT I have changed the variety around a bit to make it more cost effective and (hopefully) I will also eat less. If I have a good cheddar in the house I will eat WAY to much but if it is a good parmesan, Pecorino Romano or asiago I only use a little since all of them are a very stong flavored cheeses. They also last longer - don't go bad as fast as other cheeses. I think I am making myself hungry...

Visit farmer's markets and local farms and see what they have. Often you can get delicious fresh veggies and cheeses for a lower cost. Another option is to make your own cheese! Or convince a friend to do it It's all a matter of relative cost. We in the US used to pay *far* more for food and thought of it as normal because food was important. Now with cheap chips and cheap junk food we've been trained to pay less for bad food and think that lower price is normal. We don't think of food as being that important any more. But it's a tradeoff as with anything in life. Yes you can get cheap bad food for less money - and it damages your health. It is like putting awful gas into your car and destroying the gas tank in the process. Just because cheaper alternatives have appeared, it is still of value to pay the good price for good food and treat your body well!

I love brie, parmesan and swiss cheeses the most.
The price of brie seems to have shot up from $5 to $10 for some reason.
I guess when they are on sale now I should just buy a whole bunch of them.

that's really odd Jilly when I did a web search people said brie was coming down in price in general because more people were buying "unusual cheeses" now so it was much cheaper than it used to be.
How much does it cost you? $10 for how many ounces?

Jilly - are you buying these at a deli counter? Usually you buy that by the ounce and tell them how much you want. Or are you buying them as a commercial product, that comes with a brand name and so on?

With a large family, I have trouble with the cost of healthier foods. Next year, I plan on having a garden which should help. My husband is planning on fishing more, also.

Rebecca - do you have any bulk stores near you like Sam's Club or so on? Those have lots of great meat and veggies, we definitely use those stores to get good quality food at very low prices.

yes these are pre-packaged. They don't have brie at deli counters where you live, do they?
