Now I see why you give such good advice; unfortunately, you know whereof you speak.

Susan; I have another idea- What if the Government reimbursed Grocery Stores that rang up automatic 50% discounts on Dietic foods when a person used their Snap food Credit card? In order to qualify, the item would have to be low glycemic and not "Snackfood" Example: A Glucerna Meal Shake would qualify, but a Glucerna Snack bar would not.

That's a great idea. I found a web site you might like. It's adapac.org. Once you're on it, click on "Advocacy and the Profession" in the top right area of the screen. That will take you to a page with lots of areas listed on the left-hand side that you can click on. A lot of it is things to write Congress about, but it's good stuff, and the kinds of things you are interested in -- improving nutrition, and food legislation.
I hope you find it useful in some way. Susan

Yes, I have been hungry. Most of my childhood was spent on welfare and free lunches. Actually, I often didn't each the free lunch because the system was to have us leave class and go in early. Announcing to our classmates that we were on free lunch.
My mother made mean enchiladas with government canned turkey.
One problem was that my mother and step-father were never taught budgeting or grocery shopping. At the beginning of the month we at like royalty and at the end we had nothing left. It was feast and famine every month.
A great organization to help people is St. Vincent de Paul. They help with food and money as needed. One great thing they do is help people develop budgets.

Thanks for your comments, Paula. As you point out, charity needs to be given without degradation, and education is the most important tool for reducing poverty. Thanks again, Susan

Six more days before our SNAP food credit arrives- this time of the month is never easy. I posted a request at "wishuponahero.com" ( My member name is foodhistorian). I did get a bag of vegetables from my landlady: Her tomato plants suffered a blight, so I plan to make green tomato relish with them- they're good with baked beans and cornbread.

stupid question.. what us a SNAP credit? My roomie and I don't qualify for food stamps in IL because they count her SSABD against us in the monthly income which we barely make over the line. I have only made 15K this year and she makes her SSI. I don't understand why they count the SSI against us, but they do which means no energy asst. notfood stamps. We have a food bank but we can only go once a month and they provide 30 dollars worth of meat and fresh produce voichers a month. the canned goods are once a month only.

Hi, Jase. SNAP is http://www.fns.usda.gov/FSP/. I have a nephew in PA who lives on SSI and gets food stamps, so states must vary. Susan

Jase, check out Angel Food Ministries as described above in this thread. It's just me and my husband so their Signature box last us a good 2 weeks. We generally purchase one of the meat boxes and the produce box which averages $75 a month. But that's enough food for at least 3 to 4 weeks.
Combining that with the food bank, and you won't be buying much from the grocery store.
