I just looked at the pictures posted on "rate a fish", and saw several betta's that had beautiful "jagged-like" fins? Where are people getting them, and what would they be called? All I see at the pet stores (or Wal-Mart), are the typical betta's----so, I'm curious where the other types are coming from. Thanks everyone, and I sure enjoy this site---I thought I was the only one crazy about these little guys----it's good to see that I'm not--- . Also, I did post a picture of "Tough Guy" (one of my 4 betta's), but it was pretty large when I looked at it compared to the others. Will someone size that, or is that something I should do before loading it?

Blu,
Welcome to the fish gang. Yep, we're pretty crazy about our fish, and you'll get lots of info from others here.

The fish you described are called crowntails. You can find them at specialty fish stores. Walmart doesn't tend to sell fancier bettas. Although, I did find my double fan-tailed female there. fish

I'm not sure about cropping photos -- mine are in limbo for 2 days now. EmgBettaNut is a pro at getting hers posted.

Emg, any ideas?

Wow!! Thank you for your quick response!! I really appreciate your help. Those Crowntails are so pretty---I better not go in seach of them though, because I know I wouldn't be able to resist---hehe. It is amazing how attached you can get to these little guys, and how full of personality they really are. My latest addition (I now have 4 total) was somewhat of a "rescue", as he was one of the last few remaining bettas at Wal-Mart. He looked a little sad, but still pretty healthy. He had a little hole in his anal fin, that just seemed to split all the way down now, so I wanted to ask you if that will stay that way or if it will grow back together eventually? He's very pretty no matter what, but I'm just curious if their fins repair themselves. He's eating good, and looks much much happier----his tank mate (on the other side of the partition), is very curious about him, and seems to enjoy the company. So, they are both doing very well.

Hello Blu !

Welcome to the forum!

I found my crowntails at an aquarium store near me. All they sell are fish and fish supplies. I don't know where they get these bettas but they do tend to have some unusual finage and colors there, so I show up regular to check them out...except for lately...I am up to 12 bettas plus a tank of fry and I think that is enough for now.. So....like you, I stay away for now lest I be tempted!

About the fins...yes, they do grow back. You can help the process along by keeping thier water in the high 70's low 80's F. and making sure the water is kept very clean to keep them from developing finrot. If you do see any signs of finrot, bettafix and aquarium salt work very well. Check out some of the other posts on betta health, Jilly also has many helpful articles on keeping your fish healthy and happy.

And..by the way....I think your fish is dandy! Your picture came out very well. As far as sizing them, they will get sized properly before they get posted, part of the process. I only just learned how to use my photoshop program to do that. My pics are getting a bit better, but still have lots to learn!

Hi BettaNut, thanks for the reply. I don't think my picture was the one you saw. There was one on there from "Lisa", but it must be a different girl. My picture is still "Pending", and it's entitled "Tough Guy"---that's what his name is. He was the one that started it all---hehe. I had him in a vase when the picture was taken, but he is now in a 2.5 gl tank, with a tank mate (partitioned). I'm going to post more pictures of the 4 guys I have, cuz I of course think they are precious--- and want to show them to other betta lovers. I saw all of the pictures you posted, and you really have quite the set up, and lots of good advise for everyone---thank you so much for that. I know I have a place to go if I should have questions or concerns regarding my little sweeties! Thank goodness this new "hobby" has been relatively inexpective so far, because I know for sure I'm hooked!!! Are there other places on this site where people have posted pictures? So far I've only seen the "rate my fish" pics. Just curious....would love to see more!! Thanks again for your reply, and I'm certainly going to be at this site quite often to continue to get the great information I've been receiving!

Well Blue!

I'll be waiting to see your little guy posted then! Glad to have someone else's fish up there besides mine!

I too have gotten carried away...quite!...you are wise to avoid the fish stores while in the throes of this new interest! Haha....I wasn't so quick to catch on!

There is a whole page full of many different topics to post pictures of. There is a thread with a link to that page titled "rate a fish" or something like that. I believe it takes you to the page with all the photo topics. I have bookmarked that page (go figure! ) so I don't go by way of the thread anymore, so I don't remember if it takes you to the page with all the pic posts or not. If I back arrow now to find out, I loose EVERYTHING I just typed! Haha..(done THAT before!)

Ok, my pictures are posted---I'm trying to upload one more, but it appears to be down each time I try....so, I'll keep trying----it's of my Blue fish, so he looks a lot like this.... fish hehe.

Bettanut, I saw your fishy/froggy pic---that was very cute---glad you shared that one.

Have a great weekend!!

Blu,

Beautiful pics!! It's so nice to get a picture of the fish you hear about on this forum. They all sound so nice when described, but there's nothing like a photo to really "see" these fish!

I like the photos you posted! Herbie Husker is beautiful and so is Pretty Boy!

Their colors are unusual - especially Herbie.

Thanks Nannynan....he was from Walmart---and I searched through each and everyone of them (there were lots---new batch I think), and when I saw him, I just knew he was the one---hehe.

I got another one today----he's reddish-purple (close enough to purple---hehe). I'll send pics when he's settled....gotta think of a cute name too.
