When I was younger I used to avoid sleeveless tops like the plague but I don't any more. Especially with the hot and humid summers I have to put up with. All those cami style tops are a bit much though. The ones with the bras showing.

Don't put 'orange' anything on your worst list. I love, love, love that color, I don't care how big I am.

I tend to think ruffles and bubble tops look bad on anyone, plus sized or not. I don't mind crocks, but I just wear them at home as slippers. You wouldn't believe how the foam insulates your feet from the cold winter floors! I can't bring myself to wear them in public though. I don't think plus sized women look unattractive in sleeveless tops. I'd avoid skin tight ones, but other than that I don't see an issue. I do think women of all shapes should make an effort to not show their bra straps though, that doesn't look good on anyone in my opinion.

Moe, I can see myself in low low rise jeans - I'm laughing so hard I can hardly type! Now to get the picture out of my mind. What a great list! Every item on the list is right on. I don't like to see myself in sleeveless tops. I'll wear them around the neighborhood, but I change clothes when I go out. Also, shorts could be on the list for many women. What I wear around the house and what I wear in public are two different things. Probably just my pride, or maybe my upbringing in the fifties, but I change clothes when we go anywhere, including the mall or just uptown to get groceries.

Hi Edie,
I think what we wear around the house and what we wear in public should be two different things. Our society is becoming way to comfortable with lazy-comfortable which makes me think of another one for the list - flannel pants. I see at least 3 - 5 people a day walking around in public in their flannel PJs. And I don't just mean going out to get the mail which would be perfectly acceptable.

I've seen people of all sizes buying groceries in bathroom slippers. I always wonder how the bottoms of their slippers aren't nasty by the time they walk across the parking lot, walk back to their car, etc. I mean how much more work is it to put on shoes? I realize some people have a foot that is healing or a sprain or something, but the people I see all look perfectly fine. I try not to be too judgemental but come on, bathroom slippers?

The worst plus size mistake is in not admitting your size and insisting on wearing clothing a size (or more!) to small.
Or just dressing badly.
If you dress well, in clothing that fits well and in colours and styles that suit you, you will look elegant and your size not as noticeable.
I always cringe when I see women wearing styles that are not suited to them (or their situation).
However, many times, plus size "fashion" is the real fault. I am 6 feet tall, and yet I find that most so -called long sleeved shirts and dresses are only 3/4 length on me (I'm not even going into the tents they call dresses!) and in ghastly colours and patterns.
Thanks heavens that I sew and can make my own clothes!

The average clothing maker is making clothes for women under 5'9" so I can see where it would be a problem for you.
I'm also going to add the other way....I hate to see a woman dressed in very baggy clothes hoping to camouflage when in fact it makes a woman look bigger and sloppy.

mumu's! There is nothing ok about them. Or princess cut things for bigger gals. It only accentuates the hips and butt!

My sister, who just broke the 300 lb mark after losing 67 lbs, dresses very well for her 5'4" height. Her office worker clothes are always color coordinated, usually two piece, and look comfortable to wear although they are very appropriate for the mega insurance company she works for. When she goes shopping, she still looks good in slacks and a top. She is just a regular office worker - not management - and yet she manages to pull everything together.
I honestly think that it doesn't take that much time, money or effort to have at least a couple of outfits available that someone can wear when they are outside their home.
Is it lack of self esteem? Or laziness?

Muumuu's are great around the house, but not so great when someone is out and about. Although, they would be much more comfortable when the temperature is hot. Depends on where they are worn and why, IMO.

I agree. There are things I wear around the house that should never be worn outside the home. I think people have image issues and lack what is appropriate indoor casual and outdoor casual.

I personally love the princess cuts although they are not all created equal.

I think baby doll tops are horrible, because it makes everyone ask me "how far along are you?" And then I get to tell them that I am NOT pregnant, and we both go away feeling terrible.

That is one of the rudest questions to ask anyone. I had a neighbour hanging over my fence ask me once when I was wearing a very bagging top and bending over. She actually never talked to me again. I have a t-shirt from fatguyshirts.com that says "No, I'm Not Pregnant". I use it as a work out shirt.

I've always been on the petite side and I don't wear baby doll tops for the same reason. I put them on in the fitting room and automatically look about 5 months along. Who needs that? I've seen some very beautiful pregnant women so it's not bad to look pregnant, but only if you're actually pregnant.

Oh, I agree pregnant women are beautiful.
All styles and cuts don't work for every body type. It's important to try them all on to find what works best for yours. Petite and tall have an extra struggle because many companies don't carry a separate line for them making them work with what's available.
