Since Obama has been elected, gun sales have skyrocketed.

Even if people are afraid that guns are going to be bannde from households - it is still rather frightening to me that people are going out to buy a gun just because they might not be able to in the future.

That's insanity!

That is the equivalent of (we've been cleaning out our basement) donating some old toys that our kids haven't playes with on over 5 years - and they freak out now and have to have it - because it is going away.

Big difference it, I can put my foot down with my kids, and the toys they are whining about don't kill anything. 9(Well, the 5 yr old might figure out a way, but besides him...)

No one should buy a gun when they are feeling desparate. Desparation and guns do not mix well.

That's a great point Michelle and I think a lot of people are feeling desperate right now. I had mixed feelings about this article, that's why I left out my opinion.

I do feel a little bit better if stories like this are being report because if criminals believe that more and more homes are aquiring guns, maybe they will cut back on the breaking and entering out of fear that they pick the wrong house.

*Sometimes I wish we could go back to the weaponry technology of spears, swords, and bow/arrows. Guns are too convenient in my opinion.*

It makes me sick sometimes when read reports of people being shot at ATMs and $10 was stolen. If the situation was looked at abstractly, then the value of a human life in that instance was worth one Hamilton.

Bleh- I don't really know where I'm going with this smile so I'll stop here.

We keep guns in the house. We're out in the country and have all manner of snakes and other varmints (coyote, fox, wild dogs, wild pigs) etc. to deal with. Animal control is non-existent. Traps are ineffective with snakes and once one of the other animals comes in close enough to humans to be problematic, traps are generally ineffective then too. Not to mention, I'm not going to wait around locked inside my home for days, with the kids, to see if a feral hogs going to take the bait in a trap. I have no problems with people owning guns (after all, guns don't kill people - people kill people).

Regarding the run on gun stores, it stems from the statements made by those coming in to office regarding gun control. Its a bit reactionary, sure (though I will say we stocked up on larger bore ammo for hunting, etc.--its on sale right now because of the potential changes). Its certainly one industry that's benefitting from Obama's proposed changes. But I don't, personally, find it problematic.

The thing is Lyn - you already had your guns, and you have a legitimate reason for having them.

We own one revolver, too. It is kept locked in a safe w/ the ammo kept locked in a different drawer. The only time it comes out is when we go for target practice.

My ex-husband was in the Army, expert marksman, collected military grade rifles, and he hunted. He has his guns in a display case. He's the one that taught me to shoot. (I'm actually better than him on a revolver - but he kicks my butt on a rifle)

It is the people running out in a panic buying a gung for no reason that will never take any training that is worrying me.

They are only buying these guns because they are panicked that they might not be able to in the future.

I have no problem with guns or responsible gun owners. It is the people that are NOT responsible and just think guns are "neat" or "good to have around just in case" that scare me.

Maybe it is just the season to buy. We just bought a .22 but not because of the president. We also live in a very rural area and very fortunately next to BLM land. The .22 is really for me because the shotgun kicks a little so with the .22 I can actually aim better when I need to.

This is true - it is hunting season. So it makes sense that gun sales would be on the rise.

And, I would be willing to bet a lot of people are trying the "living simply" lifestyle because of the economy.

A lot of gardens were started this past year, fishing equipments was on the rise, maybe hunting will be on the rise, too. One deer can produce quite a bit of meat.

So it very well could be coincidence in the timing.

I was thinking the same thing...It's hunting season. Turkey started Nov. 1st. Deer season starts the day after Thanksgiving in PA. Bear season is approaching too. I love venison, actually better than beef. And it's free if you (or a loved one)know how to butcher it yourself.

Yep, I bet this is mostly due to hunting season. Still, I've been toying with the idea of getting a gun for self-defense. I'll look into the facts a bit more before rushing out and buying one. I thought I read somewhere that Obama is only interested in banning semi-automatic weapons, which nobody should own, anyway. I can't imagine why anybody would need an assault rifle in their home. If he's really for an all-out gun ban, I'll be heading out with the others to scoop mine up before January. Rest assured, I would go to classes and hit the target range.

My ex always said that if you were going to get a gun solely for home defense, the best thing to get is a 12 guage shotgun.

The simple reason being that the sound of slotting the shell into the chamber (that ch-chink sound) is so distinctive, that any intruder will recognize it and often will leave your home without a confrontation.

With that being said, any time you purchase any type of fire-arm, you should always learn how to use it properly, practice with it at a firing range, and keep it in firing condition.

BTW - he might be my ex-husband, but when it comes to fire-arms, there are not many people I know that are more knowledgable than him. I still trust his advice on this issue.
