Waltzing Matilda
There aren't any of us here who go back far enough to know who performed this tune.
Waltzing Matilda is an old Australian folk song about some guy who drowned himself when the police were after him and came back to haunt people or something like that if I remember correctly.
A little research says that he drowned himself because he was going to be arrested for stealing (and stewing) a sheep. It also appears that Matilda was not 'a' women, but may have been 'the' women of the camp. Or Matilda may have been an army coat or blanket.
Let's not do a history of every song. But hey, you should learn something everyday.
