I grow all my herbs in containers. I usually grow culinary herbs, and it's great to have them grouped in one place close to the kitchen and contained so they don't take over everything. In terms of "theme" gardens, I've got an Italian grouping (oregano, parsley, thyme etc.) and an one I use for Asian cooking and curries, and one that I mainly use for the edible flowers (like nasturtium, which have great peppery leaves and pretty flowers), and some lavenders and lemon balm etc. for making things that smell pretty! You can pretty much design your herb gardens to suit what you cook, or what you use them for. If you use a big enough pot for your basil, you'll have so much by the end of the growing season, you can make pesto and freeze it. I've got loads of info. about growing herbs, herbs blends, edible flowers etc. on my website--anyone interested can find it via my profile, I guess. Have fun--that's the main thing!
