There's an interesting op-ed piece in the Salt Lake Tribune that might cast a new light on funding human services and programs for individuals with developmental disabilities:

Deter abortions by supporting children and adults with disabilities

Sarah, Todd and Trig Palin -Indiana SMILE on Down Syndrome breakfast Friday
Quote:
... Palin will be accompanied by her husband, Todd Palin, and the couple's baby son, Trig, who was born with Down syndrome. On Friday morning, she also will attend a private breakfast event hosted by SMILE on Down Syndrome, a local group that provides resources and support for people with Down syndrome and their families. Citing security concerns and Palin's desire not to politicize the event, SMILE on Down Syndrome has declined to announce the breakfast event's location. ...

Sarah Palin in her own words ~ more of what we are looking for than in quick biographies created for the 2008 election.

Sarah Palin has a book deal to write a memoir coming out in 2010.

Families raising children with Down syndrome will be looking for more awareness and advocacy work from Alaska's governor; those who do not have a child with special needs may become more interested in supporting families who have kids with childhood disabilities.

Daughter Bristol Palin graduated from high school this week. We wish Trig's sister a bright future.

Saying she remains an advocate for people with developmental disabilities, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin appeared at two disability-related events in New York over the weekend. The appearances were seen as possible first steps toward a Palin campaign in 2012.

There was a sweet picture of Trig Palin at a July 4th parade, in a double stroller with his sister's baby, in follow up stories about Gov. Palin resigning.

From Patricia E. Bauer's Disability News site:

July 3rd, 2009 Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin abruptly announced today that she is stepping down as governor, fueling speculation that she is preparing a 2012 presidential run.

Note to "Erik Sean Nelson" - whose stinking spue was featured on the Huffington Post July 3rd - I don't think they are planning a "Tropic Thunder" sequel, but if so, I'm sure they will keep you in mind, and also look you up for future projects. If you ever develop the capacity to understand how hateful and destructive your message was, I hope it tortures you horribly. Never developing that capacity is probably a worse punishment, so ... never mind.

I was so impressed by this reaction to the Erik Sean Nelson article that appeared briefly on the Huffington Post webpage:

Appalled doesnt even begin to describe my reaction to Nelsons remarks . This isnt about Sarah Palin. This continues to illustrate the much deeper ignorance and insensitivity of the general population toward individuals with cognitive disabilities. Ironic that as we celebrate our freedoms, individuals with disabilities still are not part of the we the people. May God have mercy on all of us, starting with Mr. Nelson

Down syndrome equated with bubonic plague and polio; a disorder that needs to be eradicated? Disturbing.
Quote:
Wall Street Journal - Writer: Palin reacting to indecent treatment of Trig, Bristol July 7th, 2009
James Taranto writes in the Wall Street Journal that Sarah Palins resignation was prompted in part by her anger at such indecent treatment of her children. An excerpt:
For whatever reason, Palin-haters have been unusually uninhibited in their cruel mockery of the governors children, particularly Bristol and Trig. ...
... Last September the Onion published a fake op-ed attributed to Palin ...
... A post about Sarah Palins resignation speech, focusing on her comment that the world needs more Trigs, was posted and removed from the Daily Kos website on July 5, 2009 (by Kwaidan). The title: Just dont accuse me of going full retard. ...

It is truly pathetic that these writers stuck in middle school adolescence cannot comprehend why conservatives and liberals alike understand how the world *needs* more people like Sarah Palins Trig and our sons and daughters with Down syndrome.

The Daily Kos entry read in part: Over the long weekend, Ive watched this miraculous bit of political theater several times in varying states of sobriety it presents a fundamental difference in the ways progressives and a certain subset of conservatives view the world.

So, this particular drunken layabout is unaware that families of children with Down syndrome represent the full diversity of political beliefs and viewpoints.

He also wrote: What I am saying is that, ideally, we use the tools of science and medicine to eradicate Down Syndrome and other disorders. As a progressive, I believe that we can look forward to a day when there is no Down Syndrome, no autism, no Alzheimers disease, and so on.

Kwaidan wrote shouldnt we try to envision a world where Down Syndrome and other disorders are studied as history because science, medicine and technology have relegated them to spending eternity alongside bubonic plague and polio and endevor to achieve it? Wouldnt that actually be better than a world with more Trigs?

No, it would not be a better future. Nazi Germany did not create a better future, either. And perhaps he should endeavor to use spell-check to achieve his own personal best.

Who is Kwaidan?

Opinion: Palin squandered opportunity to help
Patricia E Bauer - Disability News July 7th, 2009
Harold Pollack, writing in The New Republics The Treatment blog, says Sarah Palins decision to quit has let down some important constituents: people with cognitive and developmental disabilities and their families.
An excerpt: "Governors have a huge opportunity to improve and shape programs, and to protect the most important efforts in a time of retrenchment. ..."

Someone reminded me the other day that when Sarah Palin was elected governor, her youngest child was about five - and now she has a son about 14 months old, and a baby grandson in the family.

While it may be a valid point that she could have made a significant difference in the lives of Alaskans with disabilities and their families if she had served out her term as governor, I am thinking there are still many ways she could continue her awareness and advocacy activities. And perhaps in the life she embraces after she is no longer governor will give her more quality time, and quantity of time, with all her children, her husband and their grandson, during these years that are so important for all of us.

I have put many years and a great deal of effort into advocacy and support work as my children have grown, and I wonder how much of that was effective or helpful in the long term - but I have no doubt that every moment I spent in direct contact with my children has been an investment with great returns and especially more joy than I ever imagined.

Sarah Palin may be walking away from her commitment to serve as governor of her state, but I don't believe she would ever walk away from her commitment to her family. That's something to admire, no matter what political or cultural differences divide us.

The New Republic's writer has a valid point, and that's a relief in itself amid the unsettling attacks from the Republican party and a few crackpots who pretend to represent progressives and liberals.

I think it is only fair to mention a different view that can now be found on the Huffington Post website ~ and whether you agree or disagree with Heather Robinson, at least a vastly different opinion than Erik Sean Nelson's article. And about time.
Quote:
From Patricia E Bauer's Disability News website:
Opinions: Were Palins children ridiculed?
July 9th, 2009
When Gov. Sarah Palin announced her intention to resign, among the reasons she cited was her familys concern that her 14-month-old son Trig, who has Down Syndrome, had been mocked and ridiculed by some pretty mean spirited adults.
Was this an accurate account of what took place? Commentators offer their opinions.
YES. Heather Robinson in the Huffington Post
... Personally, the whole matter has left me feeling a little like I did at the end of seventh grade, after a year spent passively watching bullies ostracize and pick on one of the only black girls in the school: sick, and embarrassed for all of us.
Whatever your passionate opinions, whatever your disagreements with her views, this woman and her family were savaged in a manner that went beyond any reasonable standard. She is a public figure, but her husband and children are not. That did not stop certain members of the media and blogosphere from ridiculing them in vicious fashion, even long after the election was decided. President Obama, to his credit, spoke out against it ...
... Then there is the matter of how the media treated Mrs. Palin's family, especially her children. How sad that normal people may no longer wish to run for or hold public office due to this horrific sort of exposure, including abuse of their children. ...
... am I alone in feeling that ridicule of a disabled infant ... represent(s) a new low? How intensely cruel and hypocritical this behavior was, often coming from "feminists" and "progressives" who probably don't realize how many conservatives they are helping to create, as anyone with a moral compass is likely to figure that, if that's how liberals argue, maybe they'll consider conservative ideas, thanks. ...

NO: Sally Quinn in the Washington Post/Newsweek On Faith blog
... I dont believe it for a second ...

YES. John Fund in the Wall Street Journal

Everyone in the family was weary of endless personal attacks, including mean-spirited suggestions on liberal blogs that all of her children should have been aborted and that she would run on a presidential platform promoting retardation.

YES, BUT: Katherine Mangu-Ward, Los Angeles Times

... her constant complaints about unfair attacks made her look, at best, like a whiny girl.

YES: Ben Voth in the American Thinker

And I'm still steamed about comments in the Daily KOS article by the otherwise anonymous 'Kwaidan' the progressive - with friends like those who needs enemies?

It's hard to know who is trustworthy these days. I wonder how it was that no one befriended and defended Heather Robinson's classmate - I appreciate more than ever my son's classmates who stood up to bullies on his behalf, especially those who told him not to worry about them because 'they are b^##he@ds'.

Ciao!
