Soluble fiber (in legumes, especially beans, also in oats, psyllium husk, oranges...) may prevent mild constipation AND diarrhea, especially one triggered by bile salts after gallbladder removal. Some people report how soluble fiber taken in the morning help them fight with IBS. Soluble fiber causes gas.
Insoluble fiber (flax seed, wheat bran, mornig cereals with bran..) may prevent constipation, but not diarrhea. They should not cause much gas.

By merely adding fiber to your diet you won't lose weight or prevent a severe constipation. Active life style imay help in ,both though.
