I agree. You're likely to want to spend all the hours it will take to start a business if it's something you love doing. If you only do something for the money, you'll hate it.

I lived through the last recession, and it wasn't fun. After alot of thought and research, I made a decision, I started an Internet Home Business. The internet has grown and continues to grow, even during down turns in the economy. It also doesn't hurt that the internet is global which open mulitple doors. The cost of an online business compared to a traditional business is more managable and the fact that you can work part time is also a big plus. The majority of homes have at least one computer and internet access. I work as a traveling nurse and have alot of time on my hands, so this works for me. You have to be carefully and don't jump at the get rich quick stuff. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more info. Mari

I looked at survey's and after looking and researching quite a few of them, I decided they were not for me. Too many of them are unethitical. Signup for info and the next thing you know there is some unsolicitied something coming your way. I went with something different, it gives me residual income. I want to retire in a few years, and I need money coming in after I retire.

I'm just curious how you advertised for a consulting business and where your clients come from. I have thought about a consulting business several times, I'm just not sure how to go about building a client base.

Do what you love, something you are passionate about, something that you are an expert on.

Start by doing it on the side while you continue with your day job, as the business grows there will come a time that you can afford to quit your job and only work from home.

Put together a business plan, it can be as simple as outlining your goals, how you are going to achieve them, what you need to do to get the business where you want it to be, and how you are going to get your story out into the marketplace. Answer the questions, what, where, when, why and how.

Unless you are getting financing the financial statements and cash flow projection statements of a business plan can wait until you are more established.

Study sales skills, every business person needs to have a basic set of sales skills and should work on them every day. Everyone is a salesperson, you sell yourself and your skills everyday, now you need to take it to the next level and sell your business.

Tell your friends and family what your business is about, advertise in affordable media that work. Make sure the cost that you are spending is going to be effective. At first you can't afford to advertise on TV but you should be able to afford a community newsletter, a phonebook ad (maybe not Yellow Pages but you can afford the other phonebooks in your area.)

Measure ad results by asking both how the customer heard about you and where they found your contact information.
