That's a very interesting question, and one that many philosophers talk about!

It is something that many people think about, to look at their lives / body as if they were observing them from an outside point of view. The Talking Heads even sang about it -

This is not my beautiful house,
This is not my beautiful wife!

Several of the books I've been reading talk about meditation being a way to better meld your inner self with the body you inhabit, the thoughts that zip through your brain and your emotions.

I'm sure we've all had situations where our emotions ran away from us, and we wished "we" could control them, as if they were something very separate from what we were ...

When that question - Who am I? - pops up in my mind I realize I'm thinking of the long haul of my soul.

I believe my soul is infinite in scope without borders mentally and physically.

Sometimes in meditation I experience myself as soul and feel limitless, like I extend out to infinity.

Who am I? My thoughts: Limitless consciousness as soul, while living in a physical and mental body for the time being to experience relationships physically, mentally, emotionally, and grow in caring love. smile

SilentSpace - if you read "The Good Earth" that is what the book is all about. It's about the "voices" in your head and how they work. You really are asking it to yourself, but because of the way most of us are raised, we start to think of these voices as separate entities.

Do you have a library near you, to get the book and see how it explains them? I'd also recommend The Power of Now which also talks about those various voices.

It is definitely a part of you which is speaking to you. It's just that over time you've gotten used to thinking to yourself so much that it starts to seem like a separate process.
