Oh yeah.. another thing. I got both of my bettas from Wal Mart locations, because whenever I wander over to the pet section I feel so horrible for all the fish. The larger tanks are often 'contaminated' with dead fish on the bottom, and dying ones floating around. The bettas are kept in a shadowy corner almost wherever I've seen them, in plastic bowls stacked on top of one another.. which makes me believe they're not getting enough oxygen. Their water is often dirty and several bettas often look unhealthy. I never see employees in that section either, and I wonder if they even feed the fish, or just leave them on display until they die and dispose of them.
I know it's bad to support a company that seems to treat the animals so poorly, but at the same time I feel horrible when I see them suffering and my pity sometimes makes me take one home. I just wish that Wal Mart would take better care of the animals if they're selling them at all.

WOW after seeing JMS' White Beta... I HAD to get one for my mother! Coincindently, I found one & was told it was pure luck. I frequent this store to knew that was true so I snatched him up & over a month later, He's gorgeous & well cared for in a triangular 1 gal tank above the mantle!
As for my purple/blue Beta, Martin, nammed after a sentimental little island called Saint Martin (LOL) He was a character until this week. That info you can read in my recent post today about trying to cure his Ph burns...
I'll start here though... Martin was purchased from my fave pet shop and placed on top of my desk in my home office. I planned that spot for him for a while as I let his future home sit for a few weeks with new water...
He aclimated very quickly and developed this routine of getting so excited when I came to my office each night that he'd just about break his little nose against the tank! He'd wiggle and I swore giggle swooping up & down like a little worm! He'd hover, after he calmed down, just at my eye level near the bottom of the tank and hang out with me!
He's on the shelf of my desk so I can peek at him LOL! If I moved at all, he'd purk right up like my dog does, as if I'm taking him out to play or something. It was quite comicle! If I put my finger on the tank, he'd follow it around, race around the tank and zig-zag up & down. Funny, he never flarred at me but I did catch him doing that when all was quiet & I wasn't near... He gave me creps one night because I swore he'd seen a ghost judging by his actions!
I read a post earlier about fish being affraid of the dark & ir reminded me of Martin.
This forrum is excellent & I hope it thrives forever! I've received great advice & noticed the majority, if not all, participants seem wonderful! I pray Martin gets well again and again, I thank you all!!!
TTFN

Hey all! Now I get to brag about my fishy! =)
I named him Pluto, mostly because his colors reminded me of the planet. Also because I love the zodiac, and the ruling planet for the Scorpio is Pluto. He has beautiful colors - blue, purple, and red.
Pluto tends to shy away or flair at people he doesn't know, but he's very aggressive. He gets moody and mad at me when I'm gone too long. He's also extremely picky xD. He'll follow my finger, and he'll jump outta the water for me. The only person he really likes aside from me is my boyfriend, because Pluto always sees him and my boyfriend had to take care of him for the first few days we bought him (I didn't have money for a tank, and my boyfriend already had two bettas, one with a divider tank).
I love my fishy!! ^__^

A friend gave me a betta as a valentine's gift (we were both not dating at the time). I'm not good with pets or plants, so we thought that his time was limited. With my track record I figured he better be pretty strong if he wanted to live with me, so I named him Hercules.
Well, Hercules is still swimming. I almost boiled him the first time I changed the water in his tank but he survived, which is why I think his name fits.
Hercules is a loner like me, and he doesn't like to be fussed over. Sometimes when I first see him in the morning, he's floating up at the top and when this first happened, my first thought was that I'd killed him. But he was just resting. So now when I look at him to make sure he's okay, he hides behind the plants.
I can't believe I became attached to something that doesn't talk but he communicates in his own way. When the tank episode happened. He let me know right away that it was a little too hot in there: He floated to the top and stop moving. I figure that was enough for me to know something was wrong.

Hi Caelan and Kennie! Welcome to the fish forum.
Yeah, our bettas are pretty good communicators once we figure out how to listen. And when they don't get their way, they let us know we're in deep doo doo. Tell us more about Pluto's moods - he sounds like a neat fish.
Emg, I don't think Kennie is kidding. But since Hercules is half-god, it seems he is immortal.
Hmmmm, Pluto and Hercules are both ancient Roman names (the Greek equivalents are Hades and Heracles)...so there you go, cool names both.

I'm telling the truth. , but don't worry, all of my friends laughed at me when it happened. But I did almost boil him. I don't have an automatic dishwasher (save my hands), and I'm a germo-phobe so I always run the water pretty hot and now I think I've desensitized my hands or something because the water felt lukewarm to me, but Herucles thought differently. When it happened, I didn't notice until about two minutes later that Hercules wasn't moving at all. I mean, most times he's pretty stationary, but he'll move a fin or a cheek or something, but this time he just sat there. And so I moved the tank a bit to see if it would make him move but he would blow one bubble and sit there at the top of the tank. I called a girlfriend who came over with room temperature water. If she hadn't been there, I wouldn't be posting to this forum today. I'd be in mourning.
