I see little to no similarity between kids and pets, just as there is little similarity between adults and pets. I have four dogs two pugs ages 7 and 5, a mixed breed rescye who is 100 lbs at age 6, and an english bulldog I also have three rescue cats adn a foster pug. I work with kids all day as a teacher and can tell you that the difference between kids and pets is so great its almost impossible to explain. Yes you have to take care of both and be responsible but you dont need to do anywhere as near as much for pets. You dont need to worry about singning them up for school or extra activities. You can choose the activities. Pets never grow up and want to be away from you. They cant talk and they cant question. the only similarity is cleaning up after them. also Im childfree and consider myself to be somewhat maternal. I love working as a special education teacher and I love my students and dont mind caring for them, but I cant be that way all the time like a parent has to be. Ineed some break time. Mothering my students at school and my pets at home is perfect for me.

Most Importantly:
1. Pets don't talk back
2. No one will put you in jail when they find out you're keeping your pet in a crate.

BTW- I am so proud of my new kitty Mr. Wallis Thomas.

This morning as I was rushing to cram my key in the lock and get out the door I heard a terrible noise. Sure enough, he had knocked over his dish. I said "I don't have time for that Wallis! That mess had better be cleaned up by the time I get home!" -And it was!
Good luck trying to leave your ten week old baby at home alone all day, much less getting him to clean up what he spills!

well they might put you in jail for keeping your pet in a crate depending on how and why and for how long it's done.

Also you do need to watch out the cursing if your pet is a parrot! Parrots can learn to swear very quickly lol.

SOME pets - e.g. NOT dogs as a rule - are MUCH QUIETER than children, babies or even teenagers are as a rule. They cost less. However old they are they (again depending on the pet!) enjoy cuddles. They have NEVER been known to shoot up schools! They will never tell you that whatever is wrong in their lives is YOUR fault. They MAY in some cases need medical care but they NEVER need braces or college or University! I've NEVER heard of a terrorist pet say blowing anything up and killing people. They are USUALLY a LOT more independent than children. They NEVER beg you to take them to McDonalds or buy the latest toys they see on TV. You NEVER have to worry about them growing up to believe the OPPOSITE of your beliefs - whoever heard of a republican cat for e.g. or a pro-life dog?
It is IMPOSSIBLE for pets to get your bad genes.
Their love life concerns you a WHOLE lot less & who their friends are, these things are non-issues! Unless you are breeding animals do you really CARE if Polly your prized Persian has her wicked way with Terry Tomcat, the village idiot? You don't have to go to their school plays or cringe or their report cards and you NEVER have to help your pets with their homework!

I leave the child-rearing to people who feel called to it. I've never felt that call.

Not bad, Lady! I would have to agree with you there. Dogs are very democratic and cats are all about the cats (not that there is anything wrong with that).

I think parrots are republican.

The only pet I have is a baby Blue Tounged Skin named Gear, and he's quite spoiled. I cook his food for him, after all. ;] Nothing too bad, though. Mainly shredded veggies and tiny pieces of chicken.

(I think he's a democrat..)
