Just in case ya'll have wondered what happened to me....about 3 weeks ago I slipped on the ice walking on my porch and fell and sat on my ankle and got a compound fractures on both sides and a piece of the bone was shoved down into the ankle joint. Good thing my son was home (school was cancelled because of the ice) because I was laying in the mud in the flower bed and writhing with pain. I did manage to stay pretty cool though because I didn't want Steven to pass out and luckily he didn't look at my leg (he is notoroious for passing out). After I managed to get up off my ankle it (I guess a nerve was pinched because it didn't hurt so awful bad as at first) I scooted on the porch and my neighbor came and helped my son get me in the car to go to the er. It hurt so bad!! My left foot was on the left side of my leg sticking out funny. Steven drove me to the er and hubby met us there. He kept telling me on the phone that I probably sprained it and I kept telling him it was broken and when he saw me he started freaking out and saying "Oh Connie". I just kept telling him and Steven "help me". I didn't cry at all unbelievably. Probably because I was trying to hold it together for Steven and then Rusty looked so freaked out and kept yelling in the emergency room to hurry and do something for me. They operated the next morning and I stayed in the hospital 4 days. I started off with a fiberglass splint for a week and after they removed it I seemed to have a lot of problems. I am in an air boot splint thing and I couldn't get it on the first day because my ankle was swelled up the size of my knee. I went back to the dr the next day and he fit it on me. My ankle had swollen up so bad that some of the insicion opened. Do you know they only glued it together? My scar is going to be really big, I think it may be 8 inches long on the plate side. I have been going to phsyical therapy for 2 weeks now and that seems to help. I have a big plate on one side of the ankle and 8 screws and a big screw on the other side. My mom was here taking care of me during the week and my family was taking care of me on the weekends. The doctor said no weight on the foot for 5 weeks or less depending on how I do. I take off the boot for physical therapy (stretching your toes toward and away from your body) and the fun one is they dump out marbles and beads and little stuff and I have to pick this up with my toes and put them in a dish. This has really helped with my pain as my foot was pretty much stuck in one position.
I have had a few complications. Last week I got an infection and am on antibiodics. I sure hope a round of antibiodics help as I would prefer not to have another surgery to remove the plate and screws.
Anyway, that is the mini version of the ankle/ice saga. I may never leave this house again if it is icy! I hadn't been on the computer in forever. I am mostly on the couch or in bed. I have been using a walker and am pretty much banned from using the crutches when I am alone because I am not very good on them and have fallen a couple of times.
I will check in now and again and have to live vicariously through all of ya'll. I can't do much of anything except watch tv and read books and sleep. Hopefully I will recover without any more problems. The dr said best case scenario I would be back to normal in 12 weeks...

Take the time you need to heal, Connie, and don't push it. Sorry you have gone thru so much pain. Take care.

Oh no Connie. What a nuisance.
The break sounds very similar to the one I had 3 years ago. After 2 months the doctor took that big screw out, but I still have the plate and all the little screws in my ankle. I was off work for 2 1/2 months because it was my right ankle, so I couldn't even drive to get to work.
Hope you're feeling better and back with us again soon.
Mavis

Thanks ya'll for the kind words! I am starting to get really bored but I am trying to stay as busy as I can. I have read several books and really caught up on my tv viewing! You just don't realize how even easy things are impossible! My son is on spring break next week and so it will be nice to have his company all week. I go back to the dr on Thursday for xrays and will find out if I can start putting a little weight on it then.

Hi Connie! I was wondering what had happened to you! I've missed all your house stories. You seem to be a magnet for injuries, you know that? <hug & grin> Seriously, I'm sorry you've had such a horrific mishap. I cringed right through your whole post. I was sent home from the ER with crutches once & gave up figuring out how to make them work. I think you have to be a master at coordination to use those things! I hope that things heal very well and time flies faster for you. Can you at least work on your jewelry? I would go nuts having to stay put all day long. Hang in there! Donna

Hey Donna,
I have been working on making some jewlery. I have a arts and crafts show coming up next month. My sister is supposed to bring some stuff and go with me. But so far I don't think that she has anything made. My son is on spring break this week and I hope to get more stuff done. All my beading stuff is in one room and when I start something I try to gather everything up for someone to carry but usually don't get everything. I am sure my family will be happy when I am back to normal.
Thursday I go see my dr and he is going to let me know if I can start putting weight on my ankle. I dread physical therapy after that because right now I can move my foot up and down but not in any other way.

Me again checking in....I am not doing well, my ankle has not healed and I have an appointment on Wednesday with another orthopedist. My gp thinks I need another surgery. He thinks my broken bones are too far apart and so that is why it hasn't healed. Wish me luck all...
