Obviously, it's unfair for a couple in a committed relationship to be penalized. But I don't see things changing for a while - there is too much resistance on the right to even acknowledge those long-term relationships.

There is nothing we can do about it. Even some places that allow taxes to be done online aren't current with the states that let you file jointly.

it's a fact of life right now that we will pay higher percentage in taxes while we are still considered "single" or not "married"

It actually makes me wonder the other way too - why do we have any change in taxes for married vs non married people? Why should two people in a house who have a legal piece of paper get taxed at a different rate than two people in a house without that legal piece of paper?
