Couldn't agree more - this is what I thought with my cat.

Even when I was a student and could barely afford stuff I took my cat to the vet and paid them thousands of pounds to make him well again - I'm still paying the credit card bill off 2 years later.

But he is worth it and I don't regret it.

My cat, my choice to get a cat, thus my responsibility.

I wish parents would take this attitude toward their kids. Society might be a nicer place to live in, then.

I had a very similar experience with DW 3 years ago. She has had asthma her entire life, although not very seriously, most of the time. She is on asthma medication (an inhaler and Advair) One time she had a very bad chest cold and had a VERY serious asthma attack. It was so bad that she could not even walk up stairs. I took her IMMEDIATELY to the local medi-center (3-4 miles away) instead of to the nearest hospital (20 miles away) because she looked as if she was going to pass out with minutes -- I've NEVER been more scared in my life when that happened. If it meant me spending thousands to get her back to safe breathing, I would have done it. There are times when money is literally meaningless. That was one of those times. That a parent would not think the same for his/her CHILD makes me seethe with anger. frown

Personally, given that situation, those parents should be prosecuted for MURDER, locked up in prison as an example of what not to do, and have the key thrown away, not just given a slap on the wrist for child abuse. Anyone who lives with someone with asthma, especially a parent, has to know what a serious attack looks like and how fast it can come on, and that it is deadly. Anytime we travel, I make it a point to know where the closest medical center/hospital is, just in case. I have never had to use that information while traveling, but with my luck, the one time I don't know such information is when I would be needing it.

If it seems like I am more passionate about this, it is because I am -- and I am not apologizing for it one fracking bit!

The same thing happened with our Akita at a time when we were really broke. But his chances of recovery were 90% and he was otherwise healthy, so we went though with the emergency surgery. He was a member of our family and we were responsible for his care and I'll never regret the money we spent.

Freespirit,
I couldn't agree with you more! My cousin & her son are both diabetics and I know how expensive everything is. When he graduated with his teaching degree, she told him he had to find himself a teaching job right away because he had to get insurance ASAP!

If they'd just tell women on wellfare (or whatever program they're on) that they won't get additional funds if they have more babies and give them the number to their nearest Planned Parenthood (where they can get free birth control) I really think it would help the situation. Maybe even tell them if they don't visit PP by X date, they don't get their money any more. That might help too. What a shame these people have to be taught these things. Common sense. If you're broke, quit having kids! Ugh!

Oh, and you ROCK, BTW! What a great post!

That people this stupid are even allowed to breed is a travesty. But guess what happens if the kid dies? Oh, no worries, we'll just go and make another one to replace it!

I have no words.

OMG! This is absolutely horrible. Good God! The poor kid. I think it's outrageous that they didn't stop sooner, but I think there are other things at play here, too. I can see being scared to go to the hospital because of the ridiculous cost of healthcare. But you can usually work out a payment plan after the fact. You should be able to go anywhere you need to go. It shouldn't be that only certain hospitals are available to certain people.

This is awful. I could see people that don't have health insurance being even more paranoid about it. I have a friend that doesn't have health insurance, and she was having trouble breathing one day, and she never did go to the hospital. I told her health was more important, but she lives from paycheck to paycheck, and she knew she couldn't afford it.

Again, I told her what I said above, that you can work out a payment plan after the fact. But she wouldn't do it.

Happy, when I broke my kneecap, I was uninsured (new job- I was not quite to enrollment week). The hospital I went to was super nice about setting up a payment plan. They told me the first payment would be due in 2 months. I would be back at work by then, and it didn't seem like it would be a problem.

Instead of the schedule promised, they sent the first bill the week after my surgery. As I wasn't working yet (and lived alone- no income in the house whatsoever) and couldn't pay it. Phone calls did nothing. The account was sent to collections before I was off the crutches. Payment Plans are a joke... a really bad joke.

I can relate to that. My poor cat got sick the same week that I had finals my senior year in college. I wasn't working at the time becuase I was trying to finish school and I was about to get married, so my credit cards were already being used for various wedding things. But I didn't care. I paid $500 for him to get the medical attention he needed. That was over 2 years ago and I couldn't imagine not having him around today.
