Thanks so much for the great article, Moss. You took a complicated subject and distilled it very well. I take omega3 capsules and also try and eat walnuts, avocados, etc. I think they really help make my skin look better.

I have a special weighing scale which shows me the fat percent but if you don't have such a device you can use something online like the online body fat calculator from here. Just wait to see your conclusions.

Actually, I can attest to certain "fats" (if that's how you want to look at it) aiding in weight loss. Eating tuna for lunch every day helped me get over my plateau, and I was able to go from 127 lbs. to 119 lbs. fairly quickly, though I'm sure it wasn't the tuna alone (working out 90 minutes 5 days a week, salad for dinner and racquetball helped, too). I never considered the fatty acids in tuna; I just started eating it because I knew it was really healthy, and it was so easy to pop a can of it at work. I used to throw mayonnaise and sweet relish in it to make a quick tuna salad, but I knew the mayo was killing any healthy change I was trying to make. I noticed one of my coworkers just throw in the sweet relish with some salt and pepper (without the mayo) and tried it -- it's great! I think a good rule of thumb, with fats and anything else, is "moderation." Small portions, and don't eat after 7 p.m.

Tuna is a good lean protein too! I'm a little wary of eating too much of it tho these days as I've read there is mercury in it.
I get packaged salmon now that it's available and use it on salads at lunch or even on wheat crackers. It also has the healthy fats in it.

I think there's mercury in everything - the old style lights we used to use (or I suppose that some people still use) actively emitted mercury from them I agree you shouldn't drink mercury down raw! But I do eat tuna ...

I read somewhere that eating heated oils and fats has been linked to inflammation. We are supposed to eat fats from raw plant sources.
IF this is true then what would be the difference betwen baked fish and fried fish?
Can you buy fish oil supplements that haven't been heated?

I think the main problem with heated fats comes when they overheat and get burned, then their chemical structure changes into carcinogens. (Think of seared meat on the grill) That's one good reason for cooking with vegetable oils that have a high burning point such as olive oil.

The other night on the news they mentioned marinating meat before cooking made it healthier. But then they showed footage of someone barbecuing which they said a few months ago was not good for you. Very confusing information out there.

Fats are a necessary part of your overall health and the functioning of your body. They are needed to make hormones that run everything in your body and do alot more. An important footnote to my above post. Essential fatty acids, good fats, are essential because your body does not make them, similar to Vitamin C. You must supply them. If you've been hoping that your diet has supplied the good fats, look at it again, carefully. How much of your diet includes the bad fats. This causes ill health and disease. It needs to be corrected with a good fat. The top 3 good fats are in order: 1. Hemp Seed Oil 2. Flax Seed Oil 3. Sea Buckthorn Oil

Hi,
The interesting thing I found when I was researching fats years ago was that the best health benefits--or at least, the only well-researched health benefits--of omega-3 fatty acids seem to come from eating fish in its fishy form. As in, salmon on your plate. At least, according to the research I came across years ago.
If I remember correctly, there's not as much research to support the plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids actually helping with heart disease, stroke, etc. Or even fish oil capsules. But that doesn't stop me from taking them. ;-) Does anyone know of any research that actually says taking flaxseed oil and such has an effect on your health?

I've recently started to do a lot of cooking with Coconut Oil. It contains healthy medium chain triglycerides. It also holds up very well to high heat.

I think you need to keep your oil fresh and be careful when cooking with it as when oil gets heated, some of can become hydrated which means that it turns into the dreaded trans-fat which is the worse type of fat around. If you use a deep fat fryer, change the oil quite frequently and do not leave it in the pan.

Extra Virgin Coconut oil is very safe to use both for cooking and weight loss. Even though the saturated fat content is high, it is the form of this saturated fat that makes the difference. Without going into the Biochemistry of fat suffice it to say that when this source of fat is used there is no danger of it causing heart disease or stroke. As fat oxidizes it forms free radicals and when these free radicals come in contact with healthy cholesterol in the body it causes the cholesterol to oxidize and as the concentration of oxidized cholesterol increases cardiovascular disease will develop.
