I just read on Yahoo that Americans spend around 1.9 billion dollars on Easter candy.

I bet dentists are delighted!

I'm blown away by that figure.

I see that they say Easter is right behind Halloween in candy spending. It is scary that we just load ourselves up with sugar like this. How is this possibly good for kids??

US population is apparently 310 million right now. So that is $6 a person. Really, not that bad when you think about it .... we're spending zero here but I'm sure someone is spending $14 smile

Lisa we aren't buying any candy here either.

When the children were young it was a few jelly beans and we'd buy them books or games. We never filled a basket with candy.

My granddaughters also are limited so I bought an Easter Bunny snowstorm and this was well accepted plus they have something permanent to keep. Don't know what will happen next year. Maybe start a collection if I can find any others.

I did spend about 9 tops on my five boys for eggs. I have no problem buying them eggs once a year. It is fun, we did a hunt this year, and it made them happy. My youngest is good at not being greedy, he knows when to stop.
They know what easter really is, and chocolate is a treat, even fizzy is usally only brought here at Christmas!

I think an Easter collection sounds like a lovely idea!! Instead of chocolate which adds on pounds and creates cavities, give them something they will keep and remember!

Setting up the expectation that "food is a reward" is not a good long term message, that's my vote smile

I filled my kids Easter baskets with springy things like sunglasses, some bubbles to blow outside and things like that with only a very little candy. I got my son some plastic eggs with little cars in them too as he loves to play with cars.
