I have a sil who was an only, which is why she had more than one child! (I was surprised, as the first one was a handful, and I didn't expect them to have another.)
I am the youngest, and only girl, of three. My middle brother is now estranged from the family (drugs, violence, fun stuff like that, so he doesn't know he is an uncle, he doesn't know where any of us live anymore) and my other brother -- well, he's a good person, and we stay in touch, but if we weren't related, we would be unlikely to hang out together!
My son is an only. When he was younger, he definitely wanted a sibling. Later, he saw benefits of being an only. (But he definitely wants kids someday.) Now, I think he could be happy either way.
Having kids is a [censored]-shoot -- you really don't know what you will get. We have some influence in them as we raise them, but there are other things that come into play that we can't control. And at some point, the child has to start taking personal responsibility for his or her own actions.
