The woman at PetSmart told me that it's normal for Cichlids to have white spots on their fins. I've never had a fish with ick before, so I'm starting to wonder if that's what Flounder's got. He seems really healthy other than these 2 spots that do look like chunks of salt. None of the other 6 fish or the plecos in the same tank have this. fish

If it is ick, should I take Flounder out and treat him alone, or treat the whole tank?

Nann...

If one fish in the tank has ick...they'll all have it. It's best to treat the whole tank..and easier too I think..as most of the tabs I have run accross are for 10 gallons.

When my fish had ick, I had to break up the tabs and guess at the dose. Must have guessed right as they got through it just fine. Haven't had issue with ick since.

Emg  fish

Guess I am confused as to why your plecos can't have algae wafers. Are we on poop control or do you think they won't clean the algae if you feed them the wafers. In my experience anyway one wafer per pleco a day did not stop algae control at all and yes they do mess up the tanks some. Plecos do need more than just the algae in the tank to thrive. They will live "for a while" on just the algae in the tank, but just like bettas..sometimes people pass along the wrong info with good intent but it ends up shortening the quality of life for the fish.

Just My Humble Opinion

Sorry Glo!

I didn't mean to scare you that way! After seeing 30+ wafers dissolve into the water I hesitate to experience that again! Of course the plecos grew about 2-3 inches each after that experience. :rolling:

I'll be giving them wafers but keeping them out of reach of the boys!

LOL No problem I am so glad to hear, not about the over feeding that must have been a huge mess for you...hmmmm!!!! but. ...There really is a rumor out there that if you feed a pleco it will not keep your tank clean..so that's where my head went...so i am sorry too. I know you care for your critters really well just thought maybe you had runinto that info somewhere.

You could make your son some algae wafer sandwiches if he does that again to convince him the fish might not like to eat them as much as he thinks they do.

They say blue-green algae is good for people too. "Here son, have your algae sandwich." eek Somehow I think he'd pass.

I bought quick cure last night at the store and added it to the tank with the cichlids -- the water turned sorta blue. fish I haven't increased the water temp, but will tonight.

I'll let you know how it goes.

I've used Quick Cure and find it takes a few days to kick in, but it does not kill snails like some medications, so I suspect it's on the gentle end of medications.
