this is like an endless saga with my south american cichlids. I finally caught the interpid paradise fih, Joxer (a character from Xena, not jaxom from pern). he is now recovering form the salvini in his own vintage goldfish bowl, with two otos as companions.

I added a large tinfoil barb to the salvini tank, and that mean fish really beat up the poor, huge tinfoil. So now it's just the Salvini in the 20 high, with a small Jack Dempsey, the only fish he can really avoid the salvini.

This is really annoying and I think I am going to make another change. The salvini will have his own 7 gallon, and I am going to put back my Oscar and the tinfoil to the 20 high, plus a gorgeous yellow blood parrot cichlid (peaceful) that I picked up yesterday. A firemouth (peaceful) would probably be a good complement to complete this tank.

I have my eye on a red devil cichlid, but since it's also a meanie, not sure if picking it up is a good idea.

I had to remove everything from the tank to get the Salvini out, who is now sulking, all alone, in his 7 gallon bow-front.

I moved the tinfoil bard to my schooling tank because he seemed to be flipping out from the limited space where he was being kept with the oscar, Jack and blood parrot.

LAter today i will be moving all my nicer cichlids to the 20 high and probably the tinfoil barb as well.

my salvini is STILL sulking in his 7 gal. He hides vertically behind a rock slab. I never see him and he refuses to come out or eat. It's like this lovely empty tank with a few rocks, a heater and a filter. But I can't put anything esle in there or he will try to kill it. I think it's time to return the salvini to the LFS. Anyone have any other ideas for a mean fish and what to do? I'd keep him in a species tank by himself, except that he never comes out. What's the fun of that?

How bout an even BIGGER meaner salvini...to give him some of his own medicine back...at least you might have two of them chasing each other around the tank...something to look at...

Emg

Jilly, after reading all your strings, I'm curious how many tanks you have? I'm not sure if you have your tanks/occupants posted anywhere, so if I'm asking a redundant question, a link will suffice.

Thanks!

Hey CBirney,
Welcome to the Fish forum. Do you have a cichlid aquarium? Tell us more!

Well, right now I have:
-a 1 gallon tank with two huge goldfish crowding it.
-an empty 10 gallon aquarium.
-an empty 55 gallon aquarium with a Fluval 303 canister filter, and getting soon a great stand from Petsmart.

As you can see, I don't have much - yet. I am just about to graduate and I'll be moving from the dorms to an apartment and will be making some good money. I'm trying to decide what to put in, so if you can say anything to sway me towards cichlids.... Right now, I'm thinking of some clown loaches and angel fish. I'd eventually like to do saltwater, but that seems kinda hard to start off with.

I LOVE my African Cichlids! I have a 20 gallon tank with 6 small cichlids right now. I am purposely overcrowding the tank to help with the aggression issues that are bound to surface in an African tank.

I have an Auratus, an Electric Yellow, a Blue Kenyi, a Jewel, and a couple of Haplochromis (not sure what kinds, I think they may be too young to tell.)

I'm thinking about getting two more, I was advised that 7 or 8 is the ideal number for an overcrowded 20 gallon. I was thinking about getting a Red Zebra.

My cichlids crack me up. Whenever I walk in front of the tank, they all swim up to the front to greet me... well, to try to get food more likely. They are still very smart fish and I wouldn't give them up for anything!

Our fish seem pretty happy with the new set up, but the plecos are seeming hungry. Sigh. I don't want to get algae wafers -- Right Jilly!? eek The cichlids are still getting a lot of food -- between my husband, two sons and me I think they're getting fed at least twice a day.

But they come to the front looking so hungry . . . I feel sory for them.
