Oh, yeah, another thing, I knew when I was in college that I didn't want kids. I can't believe that in your entire class, you were the only one that didn't want kids. That goes to show how strong the programming still is. I'm 36, and we are talking about 18-21 YOs buying into this ancient garbage. Wow, just wow.

I had a women's studies class in college, and I think they talked about childfree folks. I can't remember for sure. But it was a very tolerant class. I wish a women's studies prof could have caught wind of that class discussion. They probably would have went OFF.

Ironically, there weren't many interesting guys around when I was in college. So having kids wouldn't have been an option. Who would want to have kids with a beer guzzling frat idiot. I just think it's interesting that women are dreaming of families when most of their peers probably still haven't grown up yet. But I bet some of them will go on to have families with frat idiots. I can't imagine why anyone would do that, b/c you know they are irresponsible and love to drink. I just don't get people, I guess that's what I'm trying to say!

Save your own life - don't have kids!

Wow! Thanks for the update thedopespot! That is pretty cool that she did all that, and it sounds like the class got a lot out of it too. You should be really proud of yourself that you were courageous enough to stand up for yourself and tell her she was wrong! I think it's awesome too that some of the other students were able to admit their true feelings. Way to go!

I'll bet that there were others in class that felt the same way - unsure or wanted a CF life - but they were not brave enough to say so...safety in numbers - IMO your action probably helped them to feel comfortable enough to "speak the truth"...& if others have just become aware that parenting is a choice - again, they have you to thank for that...
Strange that you as the student are doing all the teaching...
At least, your Professor has made some attempt to redeem herself - she has probably never been challenged before and you made her stop and think or even become concerned you might "go higher" with a valid and serious complaint. Either way, she will be more measured in her views in the future. Again, thanks to you...
I have a feeling you've just made it a lot harder for me to secure a room at my favourite CF resort!
It's okay - you're forgiven...
Great to get the positive feedback...

You don't have to worry about the reservations at the CF Resort at least for now. In a few years, when these students are out of college, then you have to worry. So put in all the time at the resorts that you can now smile smile

Good point Duane - I'll sleep soundly tonight....
BTW I was reading your post under "Names I Don't Like" or similar - you mentioned people can't spell your name.
I was wondering about your name...how is it pronounced?...when I see your name, I think "Dwayne"...is that right?
Is it pronounced "Dwayne" but spelt differently?
ie. Belinda is now often Byllinda.
Is it a family name?
Sorry...just curious.
I don't want to be mispronouncing your name (mentally) every time I read one of your posts!

The way it is pronounced is "Duwayne". It is spelled Duane, but the number of variations (induced mostly when a young kid and being picked on) is a lot. Dwayne and Duwayne were the most common misspellings. The teasing ones were "Dwain" and "Dewayne". I get mail addressed to all number of spellings of my name (when someone gets my information and I don't type it in). I am well used to telling people how my name is spelled when on the phone, out of habit. As far as what people think about it internally, as long as it isn't something like dip$#!+, I don't care smile hehe

My mother was born of Mexican-American parents in southern Texas. All of her 12 brothers and sisters were given really Spanish names. The root of my name is Duen~o, meaning owner or master of the household. In Spanish, that is pronounced Duh-wen-yo. If you take the tilde-n out of it and replace it with a regular n, the English-ised version of the name is Duane. It doesn't help that Wayne is a common name as well, so I've been called that as well. I know I've seen it around a lot, but for a kid, it is not a good name, and as an adult, it is probably as good a name as Jon -- you get used to telling people how to spell your name, because most people would assume you spell it as John. It doesn't help that I am soft spoken and people have trouble hearing my soft, lower voice, which doesn't help with the comprehension of my name, either.

After a while, you get used to it (like I had a choice smile smile )

My sisters are lucky and have regular, non-mistakable, common names, with common nicknames. Lucky them. Maybe they learned smile

Thanks "Duwayne" spelt Duane - got it!
Your mother has 12 siblings! I cannot imagine having 12 kids - think I'd leave the house in the middle of the night and head for the mountains!
It's interesting that people from large families are sometimes, turned "off" kids - I remember Dolly Parton saying she knew at an early age that she wanted to do other things with her life...although her biography on line makes her sound CL rather than CF...I think she was one of 12...her father was one of 15 kids and her mother one of 10...
Dolly was raised in a one room cabin in the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee. She (& her husband) raised 5 of her younger siblings.
Can you imagine being CF in that community?
I guess you'd embark on reproduction without even thinking about it.. unless you got away at an early age.
Having been raised in this community...to even question the traditional role, you'd need a really strong personality...to be an "individual"...
Thanks for the information Duane...
