I was appalled when I read this post! This professor publicly humiliated you. I would report this professor to the department chair or dean. What a horrible thing to say. I have been out of college for 10 years, and that says how backwards people have become. Sounds like the movie "The Mona Lisa Smile". Are we living in the 50's? If you can, drop the course. Keep us posted.

I cannot believe that professor! I had a similar experience in my marriage and family class when they asked what the ideal family would be. I said I would love to be a part0time professor and a stay-at-home dad and husband to my partner. The professor, an UBER feminist, loved it and said I would make any woman a proud wife to have me as a husband. She missed the whole partner aspect of my statement and when I corrected her the whole class goes on this tirade about marriage and family and how marriage should be for procreation and the continuation of society, blah blah blah. I told them that was fine and what I wanted to do. They couldn't get around the "how" part and instead focuses on my sexual activity verses what we were discussing.. family.

Let's see.....you're a guy and you said you wanted to be a stay at home dad and a husband to your partner? Now, I do have to wonder what part of that statement the professor did not understand? Or perhaps she wasn't wearing her hearing aids that day?

My DH has a gay son who came out after being married, having a child, and divorcing. He now has a partner and both of them are dads to the child. They are a family.

UPDATE.

I will be speaking with my professor in person before class tomorrow like I said, but she emailed me again and said that she did not intend to single me out or embarrass me. I told her she didnt embarrass me but I felt as though she was condemning my lifestyle.

She said that she will now devote the next two classes to discussing the the "Childfree Phenomenon", as she put it.

I really, really appreciate you all responding to my post. You guys are so savvy when it comes to this issue and I will definitely use some of your points during our class discussions.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum, thedopespot!

That's a great outcome - let's hope that she can manage to discuss the CF phenomenon in an open-minded, unbiassed way, and that it opens your classmates' eyes to the issue of choice... Well done, and let us know how the discussion goes!

Thedopespot,

I'm so proud of you. I don't know if I would have had the guts when I was in college to talk with the teacher about what she did wrong. Good for you!

That's just awful! Good for you for standing up for yourself. That's one Bingo that drives me crazy--marriage being about procration. Why? I thought you married someone because you loved him. Kids are a choice, not a requirement.

And don't even get me started on gay marriage. I just can't belive how many people think it's their business if two people who love each other (who happen to be of the same sex) get married. Butt out already.

Your avatar is great, BTW.
