Yes, myrabeth, your naughtiness brightens my day! I hope everyone will feel free to speak their minds and be flippant sometimes, because it's so enjoyable.

Why let such inane comments get to you? Just because people say things like this, or because it's on tv doesn't mean you have to listen to it or react to it. When you react, you're giving these people exactly what they want. Just ignore the comments - anything you give them beyond deafening silence on the subject of having kids only encourages them.

Maybe that is why I don't watch sit-coms -- they are all about families. They are either a) a family with kids and the semi-humorous attempts to put up with the kids, or b) the young married couple that go though the motions until they DO have kids. (and the ALWAYS DO).

I've NEVER found them to be enjoyable.

BTW, I'll take my "cold childless home" any day over the chaos induced by one or more children, no matter what age.

Hi naz

I understand. I have had particular weeks when I am very sensitive to this stuff and it seems to be coming at me from all directions. I think it's great to read Myrabeth and Pikasam's posts because they help you see the absurdity in it. However, like you i get very indignant, and also, Cherry Red, that real estate example makes me seethe. I can't stand when people don't UNDERSTAND. I loved when HappytobeChildfree the other day said she loves people who "THINK".

I am trying as I get older and moer confident to be able to say small thought provoking things that make people stop and consider what they ahve just said. Although i don't think I am overly successful in this.

In the meantime, you might ponder what Jesus said - now, I am completely atheist but I did admire some of the things he said including "forgive them Lord for they know not what they do". (or similar!)

That "forgive them for they know not what they do" has helped me when people are speaking or behaving ignorantly.

Then this forum is so great for venting when that goes out the window and I just feel enraged and hateful!

You know, as a kid I liked non-family oriented shows too! As a younger kid, I liked The Brady Bunch, but that's because I was a kid, it didn't make me want to grow up and have six kids. My favorites were Gilligan's Island (reruns), Night Court, Cheers, M*A*S*H, Mork and Mindy (when they had a kid it was pretty non-traditional LOL!). I liked Friends until Ross and Rachael had a baby.

Now I don't watch many TV shows regularly, but the ones I like most are House, The Office and ER (though I'm losing interest, especially last season). All non-family oriented shows, though ER has some baby storylines, but they don't usually dominate. Oh, and I like Everybody Loves Raymond, which involves kids, but most episodes they don't figure heavily into the story. The show is about the adults, not the kids.

As for According to Jim... I can't stand family-oriented sitcoms. Even when I was a kid my favourite shows were Three's Company, Cheers, Night Court, Mary Tyler Moore (those were in reruns)... all stuff that DID NOT REVOLVE AROUND A BORING LITTLE FAMILY UNIT. Oh, I also liked Kate & Allie... a non-traditional family show. I can't stand the traditional family shows, they are all the same -- the wife is perfect-looking and humourless and always right and annoying. The husband is always a schlub. PUKE. Plus According to Jim falls in that category with Still Standing and King of Queens: the gorgeous supermodel married to the fat guy. Although I need to mention at this point that I actually like King of Queens... probably because there are no boring little kids!

That appraiser would have deserved it if you could have garnered up a few crocodile tears, looked sad and said "We can't have kids." Maybe she would have felt bad enough to give you a kick-butt appraisal!

I was so angry. Even if we wanted kids, why should we take our pictures down in order to put baby pictures up? Are we no longer important?

I wanted to say something so bad, but she seemed small-minded and a low class (unkempt, etc.) and she'd already made it clear our black/white/red modern decorated home wasn't her cuppa and we needed a good appraisal for the sale, so I shut up. I just wish I could have said something to her. 13 1/2 years later, it still angers me.

Totally my taste! Though we are few and far between I tell you.

Our house is very modern and minimalistic too. My childed sisters find our place "sterile", if that means serene and clean and free of clutter, I'll take that as a compliment!

Anatasia,

Hee! Yes, few and far between. The comment we've gotten a couple of times is, "Oh, we used to have our house decorated like this, but then we bought a lot of solid wood furniture when we decided to have kids." Good for you. All that heavy, dark wood does nothing for me.

We're kinda cluttery at the moment (not on purpose, just feeling overwhelmed and a little lazy) but I really do like our house the way it is. The hubby talked me into adding some color on some of the walls, but the livingroom, kitchen, and 2 bedrooms are still in this color scheme. I dunno. It just makes me happy to walk into a place that looks different than everywhere else. Feels like home.
