Welcome FroggyMoo...wow, an engineer - good for you.
The engineers had a real reputation at University - it was like a boys club - any trouble at college and it was always the engineers!
High brow events like KFC & Porn parties and the like...
Must have been hard being part of that Faculty - did you keep to yourself or become one of the guys?
Of course, things might have changed over the years - they might now be doing wine & cheese nights!
I remember engineering was one of those professions that did not appeal to women - a few professional womens organizations offered scholarships to bright and keen girls to even out gender numbers in professions like medicine, dentistry and engineering. I know they had trouble finding girls prepared to study engineering and the few that did...often decided to change courses after a year or two. This is all 20 years ago now so, I'm sure you now have a few females colleagues. What would be the ratio of men to women in your profession today? Do women tend to do one particular type of engineering?
What sort of engineering did you study? Electrical, civil...
I met a stress engineer a few years ago - fascinating - she worked on major projects all over the world - tunnels that went through mountain ranges or under water...she mentioned it was hard to keep a relationship together as men tend not to follow women...she had lost a few partners over the years when an amazing project beckoned...
I look forward to hearing more of your life story.

Thanks for the welcome Deb. Engineering is still very much the boys club. Especially mechanical, which is what my degree is in. There are a lot more women in electrical and chemical. But I was always more comfortable with the guys anyway.
One thing I have found interesting, of the female engineers I know, most of them are married to other engineers. But it takes over your life so it seems the only people who can relate are other engineers. When the other college students were playing frisbee in the quad, we were in the lab studying. laugh

Well, my wife isn't an engineer, but she has always been an electronics/computer geek, so to me that is the same thing. It also means I can tell her what I do at work (especially after a long hard complicated day), and she understands it. smile

I could NOT have married a ditzy-head woman as a wife. I value intelligence as high priority attribute in a spouse. If I had married a woman who was not techie-smart, I probably would be going crazy. smile

Training... which is what I do. As of this moment I'm away from home on a business trip. I do this often. I don't have to worry about who I am leaving at home. I can just think of my work and do it well. I cannot imagine splitting myself between my (demanding) job and a child. I think being able to do it all is a fantasy.

Massage therapy! there are not many here and I work for my self so I cant bingo myself...well I could but since I hate bingos Why annoye myself? lol it is also great to be childfree and a LMT here because all the others here in town are raising kids so they either work around there kids-grandkids cansel at the last min or just cant be reached or dont show up at all! So that makes me relible and stable giving me the edge to get ahead of the others!!! laugh laugh laugh

I would think any job that is in a male domenated field would be cf friendly.... It is usualy women that bingo other women so if you work with men... on the other hand if the men resent you being there because you are a woman you maybe bingoed all the way out just because your a girl and cant enter in there pissing contest.... so they think... Sorry guys its just the way some men are others like Duane have evolved over time! laugh (had to pick on ya! Just to see if you are paying attention!)

Yes, you got me. You can't slip anything past me smile

Yes, I am a guy, and occasionally I do have "typical guy" thoughts as are mentioned here (must be genetic). However, I squash them and act a bit more mature than others. I would like to think I've passed beyond the caveman stage of male mentality and actually use my brain smile.

Believe it or not - nannies.
We have a close friend who has worked as a nanny for 30 years - she's winding down now and plans to take a part time job in an art gallery.
She has several CF nanny friends...
She loves children but didn't want any of her own...
I suppose it makes sense - you raise someone else's kids - and after work you want/need some "me" or "our" time...she was a live-in nanny for 8 years.
She says she has lots of kids - she regularly receives cards and phone calls from one of "her kids" - now 24 years old and studying in Europe...
