Well, what I had guessed is true. My SIL is going to be a SAHM. She is really relieved. She even kind of gloating that her friend who is due in a week can't afford to be a SAHM.
She worked so hard for YEARS to get where she is. She's just throwing it all away. She worked her butt off through not-so-great conditions as a school aide to become their librarian. The school has paid for her to get her degree in library science. She hasn't told them she's not coming back.
She even said that her last day is Feb 15. She says, "if I don't feel like going in before that, I'm just not going in."
Grr. You know, whatever, I don't REALLY care. I just don't like to see a woman set herself back. And I also don't think it's cool that the school has paid for her to get this degree and she won't even tell them that she's not returning. I don't know how long her maternity leave is, if it goes until the end of the school year, or if she is supposed to go back before then.
Oh, and her mom and mom-in-law ARE renting an apartment down there for the summer because they'll be visiting SO MUCH and don't want to spend $100/night on a hotel room.
I think they're all cracked.

Oh boy. How annoying. Do you think she's going to be a permanent SAHM, or maybe just for a few years? Even if it's temporary, it will set her back, I'm sure. There are just so many things going on here. As far as the job goes, I could see her employer being annoyed that they paid for her education, and now she's off to pursue her "new career." But I guess they take their chances when they invest in a woman of childbearing age. And then stuff like this hurts the rest of us, b/c they probably wonder when they interview me if I'm going to do this - have a baby in a year.
It has to bug you a little bit too that your mother and her mother are moving to be closer to her just because she's having a baby. Not that you want them up your butt like that, but it's a shame that having babies is like one of the only events that calls for all this attention. It would bug me if it was my sister in law.
Her comments smell like entitlement. Nothing else matters now that she's with child. It aint over yet, though. Who knows what the baby will be like - she might be begging them to take her back at work. And it sounds like one of the grandmothers would gladly drop everything and watch the baby full-time. And that's annoying, too, by the way. Hang in there. You have my support.

Yep...annoying. She has achieved the pinnacle of female entitlement... (Uh oh, his forum is giving a terrible attitude about SAHM-dum)

Happy took the words right out of my...er, fingers?
Anyway, I just hope nothing happens to her or her relationship. She seems to be burning bridges with her previous employer. Just because she's currently in the financial position where she can be a SAHM doesn't mean it'll stay that way.
That's what I don't understand about parents in general. Just because finances are secure now, they make decisions that give them no wiggle room if something goes wrong. Then, when it does go wrong, they're just so shocked and sad. Well, what did you think would happen? And then here comes society with the bailout... if they're lucky.
Sometimes it seems like people have kids so they don't have to grow up.

I have a friend who is a SAHM. She tends to go on and on at times about how great it is hanging out by the pool during hot summer days, yadda yadda yadda. I just keep telling her that I would go absolutely crazy (and I would) if I had to stay at home all day long. You don't even have to factor in the kids for me! I do not enjoy being out of work because I get down on myself really easily. Plus, it's nice being able to contribute financially.

Well I got annoyed again today. We were at the funeral dinner, and I kept trying to say goodbye to all of my in-laws' relatives. I couldn't say goodbye to half of them because they were all standing in a circle going on and on about baby stuff.
At one point they were talking about SIL's aunt, who peed her pants because the baby kicked her bladder or something. They were going on and on about it. I finally looked at one aunt who never married and doesn't have kids, and I said point-blank to her, "thank god I'm not having kids. I'll never have to go through this." She just started laughing and said, "I know, not missing much, are we?"
Makes me think maybe she's CF, too, and come to think of it, she's never bingoed me. I knew I liked her!

I must be an alien, b/c that's one of the reasons I don't want kids. My parents are at the pool with my nephew like every day in the summertime. I don't really enjoy the pool - it's boring to me. But I don't think my parents mind going to the pool. I would be bored to tears. Plus you have to chase the kid around, make sure they don't run on the wet pavement, don't drown, or drown someone else in the pool. Fun! And, you have to get all greased up with sunscreen, and the kid usually doesn't want you to put it on. My Mom bought aerosol sunscreen, and one of the times I watched my nephew at the pool he was whining about putting on sunscreen. I took him out on the backporch and just sprayed him down. What a pain in the butt.

Wow Ingelbert, and so many mommies wonder why the workforce is sometimes hostile to them and women in general. :P

I sympathize with employers who hire young woman. One place I use to work had woman pregnant left and right. We had so many temporary employees and I know things were suffering business wise. I got so tired of training new people and then when they would come back they had to miss work for this and that reason. I know it has to be tough and I don't know the answer but I know I don't want to suffer for it. Oh, and when they did come back to work..their desk space was be FULL of pictures, photo albums, etc. And they would just want to stand around talking about the kid, birth, and whatever????? I must admit that I don't work. I have been "taking some time off". I am studying to do something different and when I am finished I plan to go back to work part-time. BUT, I am always thinking and trying to stay in the business loop for whatever reason something would happen and I would have to go back to work. I do enjoy staying home and so far do stay busy.

And then mothers complain that the workplace discriminates against them. Well, there are reasons for that, aren't there?
