The cult idea must come from the fact that we have a "community" of sorts now, online and through things like CF meetups. It seems like parents feel threatened by that somehow, like we're banding together for some sort of "cause." I've seen so many comments from parents like "Why do you need groups for that?" like it's weird that we should want to connect with other people who don't have kids. And we get the comments like, "I don't need to be in a group with people who don't have dogs, or don't play golf." It's fine with them to have mommy groups, but god forbid we should have support and friends with similar lifestyles. We're supposed to be suffering after all, pining to be mommies.

No thanks, I can find more interesting things to be miserable about... and change them out daily if I wish!

I think motherhood is more of a cult because they worship children. Children, the new golden calf ...

You know, they really are the new golden calf...Sure, in the 50's women were expected to stay at home and take care of the family, but it was FAMILY, including the husband who was taken care of. Today, husbands wind up being ignored in favor of the children. People wonder why there's over a 50% divorce rate, it's because they get so wound up in their kids that the adults become strangers and bored with each other. So there it is, family is sacrificed to the children, how ironic.

It's strange how some people see 'a group of unconventional people' = 'a cult'.
Meanwhile from my perspective most other people mindlessly accept the cult of 'you will have children'!
It's really nice to think that I'm part of a different community to that.
My maternal clock must be digital - because there's certainly no ticking!

Obviously, the person who called CF a cult has NO idea what an actual cult is. One of the biggest indicators of a cult is that is has a very charismatic leader, usually one who was "chosen by" the prior leader or was divinely chosen. CF has NO leadership that I've seen, it's all individuals coming to the same conclusion (not having kids is a good idea) through their own thought processes and personal experiences. Cults stomp down thinking and questioning. By definition, the CF are not a cult, because we have no leaders, and we encourage questioning. We ARE different, of course. But then sometimes to be your own person, to be true to thyself, you need to not be the herd.

It's a GREAT entry! I loved reading about how much more recognition we're getting!!! It makes me want to recheck my area for CF social groups. I know we had one in Dallas a while back...CookieCody sent me info on it, but I don't know if it still exists. Going to check it out right now.
