Hi Shayla. I am trying to make a very small beaded belt for a doll. The size is about 2.5 inches long and half an inch wide. I am having trouble making it lie flat. Would a peyote stitch be the best to use for this? Do you have drawings on how to do peyote stitch?

www.firemountiangems.com go here and search peyote stitch. it will be in the free patterns... it has a great pic and instructions for it. you maybe pulling the strings to tight and that is why it will not lay flat. just thought....

When I do peyote stitch, I try and make sure the bead are all the same size. Using different sizes can make your peyote not lay flat too. Also try freespirit's tip about not pulling the thread too tight.
Do you have classes where you live? I learned peyote in a class and then the patterns made more sense to me.

I use delicas for peyote stitch and find it will lay flat because of the beads all being the same size and shape.

oh and they make square beads as well as round and triangel beads! How cool is that? I have no idea what they would do as far as your belt but...COOL!!!

I have not yet mastered the Peyote stitch but am still trying with instructions I found on the internet. I just made the belt with single strands of beads then used an applique' stitch to anchor them. It turned out quite pretty.

Sometimes we can make really beautiful things by doing it our own way!
I learned peyote from a teacher. If you have someone to help you, it makes it so much easier than trying to learn from just reading directions.
there are a couple stitches I never could master without a teacher.

Sadly, I do not know anyone except my neice who does beading and she, too, has not yet learned how to do the peyote stitch. Maybe we can get to the library, find a book on it and sit together with a good cup of tea while we help each other learn.

I strugggled with this stitch for a very long time. I finally found the solution to it here. I looked for the project, before I decided to post this, but can't find it. Too many hurs at work this week have left me half brain dead. LOL! It's a really simple bracelet and I think what solved the struggle for me was the fact that you add the clasp, the beads in the length you need, then add the other clasp. Then you start the peyote stitch. I think the added weight of the clasps is what helped hold it i place for me. The first 3 or 4 rows are always the hardest.

Sounds like that would work. Was there a link you meant to put in? I do not see any. I am really anxious to learn this stitch because it is so pretty. Are there printable instructions at the link?
