OMG, I am completely obsessed with Law and Order right now! It's pretty severe. I love Cold Case, too. They always have reruns on TNT and other cable channels. Talk about a time sucker, though! Once I find a job in our new city things will level out for me I think.

I don't do horror either. I hate blood. And I get really upset when I watch some of the story lines. I'm a sissy that way!

What did everyone think about the article's statement that motherhood has replaced marriage as the source of romantic dreams for women?
Simone de Beauvoir dismissed motherhood as, "...'a strange mixture of narcissism, altruism, idle daydreaming, sincerity, bad faith, devotion and cynicism."

Sorry, Pinecone, guess I dropped the ball on the point of your post. Yeah, I think it's sad that women are pinning their hopes on a baby. That's putting a lot of pressure on someone that isn't even toilet trained yet! Jes. But I can understand in a way, because I think relationships can be really bad today. And women figure, well, if I can't have the guy, at least I will have a baby. I do think it occasionally helps women get their stuff together when they find out they are pregnant. I know a former wild child that grew up a lot with her daughter. I also know that she still drives drunk on a semi regular basis, and I think that's even more responsible if you are single parent. What if you kill someone, end up in jail, and your kid ends up in foster care. Did anyone see White Oleander? Or, if they kill, maim or cripple themselves and can't work, and provide for their child?
But, then there are idiot party gals that have kids and don't change their lifestyle at all. And it's clear the baby didn't fulfill their dreams. My parents are scared to death that something might happen to my nephew's Mom and that custody will go to his father, who hasn't been a part of his life. I could see him taking custody, and then asking my parents to pay a large sum of money to get their grandchild back. He's a total loser, and would do anything to get money b/c he doesn't work regularly. Someone everyone should consider having a child with, I know!

She really didn't want to have a kid, and somehow, tada! She not only adjusted to the baby, but started her own business while caring for a baby. That's realistic!!! The teenage girls that watch that movie think, "see, it all works out."

Yeah...I did not like the ending either. There were a few things I didn't like, such as the fact that her doctor did that, even though he had what seemed like a very nice wife, and they never really gave a reason.
Also, I just couldn't believe she would tolerate that husband, but I had an argument with a friend over that who said I don't understand abused women enough.
But lastly, the way she just snapped into this perfect mother, and who needs a man now that she has all the love of her baaybee? I just don't see how a relationship with a child is that romantic when the whole end goal is that they grow up and have their own life away from you. I guess the kodak moments are romantic, but I don't like this implication of the mother and child being a "couple." I think that puts too much pressure on the kid and isn't healthy.

Yeah, her doctor was out of line in so many ways. It was really inappropriate b/c he was her doctor.
I've unfortunately known a lot of abused women, and it *is* frustrating to watch. But there are certain dynamics that seem to exist across the board. It's so fascinating that women in that situation are so similar and predictable. They are scared to death to leave, and rightfully so, because statistics show many women that are murdered are killed by their boyfriends or husbands. They even start to believe the things the abuser says. My Grandmom was a classic example of this. She was abused for so long she didn't even recognize it as abuse anymore. But I can totally understanding your horror at that behavior. It *is* horrible.
Someone that was in an abusive relationship would likely not just snap into perfect Mommy. Which was another thing that made the movie so unrealistic. They usually have a series of loser men in their lives, and have a hard time breaking the cycle. And they aren't like the character in the show - they are so insecure that they would prefer to be with an abusive man than to be alone. And they fall apart when they don't have a man. The baby wouldn't cut it. They needed someone with a psych background on the set of this movie.
