The continuing trend of religion playing a role in politics has me very scared about personal freedom and how long we actually have before we will all be ruled by the laws of the church. It amazes me how the US is supposed to be the "land of the free", yet in the last few years, our freedom/privacy has taken a huge hit from the conservative right. Yikes. After the 2000 and 2004 elections, I wanted to move to Canada, but didn't quite make that move. If things don't start to improve, I might eventually have to make that jump!

I agree. The church used to run the country centuries ago, why go backwards now? The next thing you'll know we'll be hunting down witches and burning them at the stake.

Canadians are a lot less religious than their U.S. cousins. There is no actual "bible belt" in Canada.

Wow! This certainly created some interesting discussion. The main reason I posted this thread is because I wanted to get your insight into this "hot" topic. Since these are sensitive subjects that one tends to stay away from discussing at the work place, I feel that a forum such as this is a good avenue to create some honest and thoughtful interchange, in a safe way.
I feel that you can have a civil discussion about almost anything, and one can always "agree to disagree", right? Thank you so much for all your ideas and insights, I certainly learned a lot!

Absolutely. My mom's long time walking partner, J, was a staunch conservative. J passed away 5 years ago. J and my Mom disagreed on every controversial social issue, yet they were very good friends for over 25 years.

I am pro choice when it comes to the abortion issue. I am also a firm believer in the saying,"Against abortion?, support family planning."

One pregnancy scare with my ex girlfriend was more than enough for me. I am glad I got snipped so I'll never have to deal with an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy.

On a lighter note, my friend John ( who is also pro choice), is an avid white water rafter and kayaker. He has a great bumper sticker on his car which says:
I AM PRO LIFE JACKET AND I BOAT!

That's interesting about your mother and her friend, because a friendship I had is a LOT rockier once we found out where our political allegiances were polar opposites. (she's a war hawk, I'm a "fix our own [censored] and stop wasting money in fruitless endeavors that we shouldn't be mucking around with in the first place!) If talking about books, movies, and role playing games we're fine. But if the pill or abortion or what our government should be doing MAN does it get ugly. Part of what frustrates me so much is that she sees and agrees with a LOT of the same stuff I do (like the ridiculousness of women going in for fertilization treatment and popping out a litter of kids when there's so many kids in fosterage wishing they had SOMEONE care for them).

My husband has an ex that I am friendly with, (used to be friends with but we grew apart before I even started dating DH.

She will be having her first child with HER DH around Valentine's Day. MY DH wants kids, remember? And he was with her for about 4 years, so sometimes I wonder if he thinks about what would have happened if they stayed together.

I mentioned this to him a few weeks ago, do you wish that you had stayed with C? (I knew what the answer would be, but I didn't know he'd put it this way.) He said "are you KIDDING? Do you know she's a REPUBLICAN NOW???" I laughed SO hard! It's been a joke that I say the baby better look like C's husband, and not DH.

(I know it seems like a stupid joke, but trust me, if you knew the crazy mixed-up relationships all of our friends have had with each other, you'd know how funny it all is. It's like a soap opera over here.)

This is going to be a tough election for me. I may be a little late in finding this out: John McCain wants to overturn Roe vs. Wade, and leave that decision to the states. But it doesn't stop there...according to his Web site (in his own words), he then wants to start a push for ending abortion at the state level, too:

Originally Posted By: John McCain's Web site

The pro-life movement has done tremendous work in building and reinforcing the infrastructure of civil society by strengthening faith-based, community, and neighborhood organizations that provide critical services to pregnant mothers in need. This work must continue and government must find new ways to empower and strengthen these armies of compassion. These important groups can help build the consensus necessary to end abortion at the state level. As John McCain has publicly noted, 'At its core, abortion is a human tragedy. To effect meaningful change, we must engage the debate at a human level.'"

Can you imagine getting pregnant on accident and not being able to get out of the situation? Being forced to have the baby?

Do you think republicans know this guy wants to end abortion??

Any candidate that wants to take away a woman's right to choose what to do with her own body is automatically out for me. I can't understand why women who care about their options in life ever vote Republican because of this issue. If a Republican candidate is not initially all the way against abortion and is somewhat moderate on the issue or even gasp, pro-choice, it seems that eventually, the crazy right-wingers get to that candidate and make them change over to being completely pro-life and supporting all bills/potential amendments that would end a woman's right to choose.

....stepping off soapbox.....

I've heard of candidates being pro-life in their own values, but not enforcing it by wanting to make abortion illegal.

That's how it should be. Believe and follow what ideals you want in your own house, but let those in other houses choose their own path.

That kinda applies to every personal thing politicians stick their nose in, now that I think about it...

Besides, if RvW gets over-turned, abortions are not actually going to stop. They'll just get a LOT more dangerous...again.
