I also forwarded it to my mom, who just had the "worst institute of her life" and she's been teaching 35 years.

Duane_Va, that was great. I just had to copy/paste and pass it on to my DH, who is a teacher and also a department chair. smile He might want to pass that along to some of his cohorts - they all hate that "No Child Left Behind" BS and know exactly what a negative effect it's having on the state of public education.

I think I can summarize No Child Left Behind succinctly:

No Child Left Behind Leaves Every Child Behind.

I think it is the same attitude that every child is a prodigy, every child is above average, every child is perfect, no child is beyond help. Some children just will not make it. My parents have a saying: "Someone needs to dig ditches." And everyone who does manual labor, etc like that grew up as a kid somewhere. Either by circumstance or by ability, some people end up doing that, while others excel and do more intellectual activities.

The world isn't perfect or fair. Legislating it is not, is not going to change that outcome.

I totally agree - both DH & I, as well as numerous other friends/family we have who are teachers have said that every child gets left behind with No Child Left Behind. What a crock of BS.

i'm constantly finding new reasons to be enraged by NCLB. today my principal explained that schools get "dinged" for every expulsion and that every time a kid is expelled they move closer to being put on the "persistently dangerous list" which makes parents think the school is unsafe.

here's the irony: schools that have no tolerance for things like drugs, violence, etc. often have more expulsions, but are in many cases SAFER b/c they are creating a culture where students who endanger the community are not allowed to stay. they go on record as having more expulsions and end up on the "scary school list." this is maddening to me. i hate the way data can be twisted to support whatever misguided programs and standards we want to justify.
