There is a big difference between "work - at - home" which implies being an employee with a salary or paid hourly wage and being self - employed and starting a business.
I was looking for a business 18 years ago and looked into the "legitimate" store ownership, cottage industry type of things but was really disappointed after a couple months of research. The SBA people told me that without thousands of dollars (tens of thousands) to invest in a small business that I would have no real hope...and that even if I did invest tons of money I should expect the business to fail. No wonder why I turned to Direct Sales.
I never wanted to be a sales person - especially one of "those" you know what ladies who show products in peoples living rooms. My perception of the home sales person was someone who was uneducated, pushy and low class. What a hag I was to think that!
I started with a really good company and over 17 years built a business that sold more than 1.5 million a year - in peoples living rooms! My husband quit his job and worked with me and we bought our dream home, all while I worked out of my home.
I am one of the very fortunate few. I have worked with hundreds of women who come into Direct Sales and have seen just about everything. Some purchase the kit and then disappear, some make good money for a short time, some even manage to make a pretty good income and some make really good money.
The bottom line to success in Direct Sales or any business actually, is desire. If you really want to reach your goal (big or small) you have to really want it and be willing to do things that at first might make you uncomfortable. Making yourself call customer #12 after the first 11 have said thank you but no, making yourself do all the little things that need to be done that make the huge difference and making yourself treat the business like a business not a hobby are what it takes. And most importantly you must be willing to learn and take advantage of the training from the people who have been there and done that.
For anyone looking for a Direct Sales career I urge you to check out the DSA as somebody else recommended
http://www.dsa.org and also you do the interviewing of the upline or company you might want to work with.
Look for a leader who wants to know what your goals are. Does she want to know about you and your family and what your experiences have been and what you want? Or does she just do everything she can to sell you on her business? What training do they offer and where? Check out a few before you make your decision.
I wish that everyone could enjoy the success that I have and I wish for all of you good luck in finding the situation that will work best for you and your family!
