So I said it, and I swear, it was one of the best reactions I've ever gotten from a one-liner. Everyone laughed so hard, and made me repeat it four times so they could all remember it. My DH was like, "Where did you get that?? I've never heard that one before" which is a huge compliment since he's heard almost anything I can come up with. Have to admit my timing was really good.
I can't take credit for the source of it. The person I heard it from is my wife's best female friend who is a lifelong Catholic. She, being a Catholic, has been accused multiple times that she is going to hell because of fundamental differences in the way Catholicism is seen by others in the Christian community. Thusly, it shuts them up. Why?
It is simple. If you try to defend that remark, you are giving the appearance that you are trying to convince the other person that you are worried about "going to hell." Thusly, they have an arguing point against you. If you accept the point that, no matter what you do or say or think, that person making the accusation will not change his or her mind, it is like you are saying to the school bully "I don't care" and walk away. It miffs the person because the person does not EXPECT such a quick discussion-ending comment.
Plus, it is a quick verbal jab from left field -- a six syllable sentence that pops right out of nowhere.

Another variant is if there are two or more people, the appropriate reply is "I'll reserve a table for us" or some variant.
Glad it was such a hit.
