That's great, frieda! I laughed when I read that line, too. I'm glad you were able to use it.

I had a close friend years ago that was a fundie - we aren't friends anymore. I just couldn't deal with the hypocrisy. They are so rigid, closeminded and brainwashed. I don't care if I'm generalizing. That's what fundamentalism is about - reading the bible word for word and not even considering your conscience or common sense. There are plenty of hetero couples that are total jerks. I don't think their sexual preference trumps everything else about them. I find it's easier to not talk to fundies. It's just too aggravating.

Save your own life - don't have kids!

OK hehe this might help.
Sorry I threw my Bible away so I don't know the exact verses but I could probably find out. (EX Christian here)
(Mix of beliefs now like you, married to a Muslim, gay friends and for me: into New Thought, also into Witchy stuff a bit too.)
ANYWAY
Homosexuality is an "abomination?" according the the Bible?
So is eating shellfish and so is wearing more than one type of material together!
(I think it's in Leviticus.)
AND Paul said it is better to be single in the Bible so not ALL the Bible says to have kids, somewhere it says woe to pregnant women, better that their babies had been not born (or had died?) than to go through the hard times said to come.

I leave the child-rearing to people who feel called to it. I've never felt that call.

So I said it, and I swear, it was one of the best reactions I've ever gotten from a one-liner. Everyone laughed so hard, and made me repeat it four times so they could all remember it. My DH was like, "Where did you get that?? I've never heard that one before" which is a huge compliment since he's heard almost anything I can come up with. Have to admit my timing was really good.

I can't take credit for the source of it. The person I heard it from is my wife's best female friend who is a lifelong Catholic. She, being a Catholic, has been accused multiple times that she is going to hell because of fundamental differences in the way Catholicism is seen by others in the Christian community. Thusly, it shuts them up. Why?

It is simple. If you try to defend that remark, you are giving the appearance that you are trying to convince the other person that you are worried about "going to hell." Thusly, they have an arguing point against you. If you accept the point that, no matter what you do or say or think, that person making the accusation will not change his or her mind, it is like you are saying to the school bully "I don't care" and walk away. It miffs the person because the person does not EXPECT such a quick discussion-ending comment.

Plus, it is a quick verbal jab from left field -- a six syllable sentence that pops right out of nowhere. smile Another variant is if there are two or more people, the appropriate reply is "I'll reserve a table for us" or some variant.

Glad it was such a hit. smile

I am an atheist, and I know more about the bible and its arguments than many Christians do. It has to do with "Keep your friends close -- but keep your enemies closer." You can't argue against them effectively if you don't know their playbook. smile

According to the Bible, marriage *is* sacred, but only marriage in the eyes of God. Marriage, as celebrated today by most people, is marriage in the eyes of civil law -- the laws of man. The Bible warns that a believer shalt not be yoked with an unbeliever in marriage. But if a believer is married to an unbeliever, that is NOT sufficient cause to divorce. The believer can only pray and try to convert the unbeliever, for his/her own "eternal" good. It has to do with the fact that a believer will go to heaven, but the spouse/unbeliever will go to hell because he/she is an unbeliever. I think, personally, that is why some churches require that a couple getting married in a church go to premarital counseling/pastoring. BTW, these Biblical laws do not apply if unbelievers get married in the eyes of the law of man.

End of mini-lecture. smile

oh how about this one:

For someone so against Homosexuals you sure do talk alot about them! why dont you find a picture book about them that you can read all by yourself and find out if the parts dont match? and I am so sorry that you feel like you cant enjoy sex with your husband unless it results in a baby... It must be horrid for your husband to have such a frigid wife... Is that why he sleeps with so many other women and men?

and when she starts up again just say Oh I see and smile and walk away like you have just got the big picture and make her feel like anything she says after that is digging herself into a hole and she will dig it deep if she is not smart...more fun for you.

I looked it up online, since this paraphrase intrigued me. According to the New American Standard Bible, Luke 21:23 actually reads, "Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days; for there will be great distress upon the land and wrath to this people;"

Jesus was referring to the time immediately preceding His return. Are we there yet? Oh krap, better look busy...

"Men and women think that it is necessary to have children. It is not. It is their animal nature and social custom, rather than reason, which makes them believe that this is a necessity." --Democritus

LMAO after a while you build up a lot of comeback because they always say the same thing so there is nothing new about the arguement it stays the same just the voice and faces change and they all think they are saying it better then anyone or that they are the first so fire away because they never expect a comeback at all!
