Sue - I know how that feels! But,about.com - don't even go there! Your time with your family is worth more than that. Don't know if it's true, but apparently they put you in fierce competition with other writers, steal your best ideas, take the site you wrote and discontinue your application after weeks of 24/7 work!
To contribute to the family budget we'll just have to think of something else!

Also, if you're looking to get something published off-line, check the forums of your favorite magazines. They will often ask for reader input there. Even if it's a blurb, they will pay money for it.
Woman's Day pays $50 for household tips (quick-cleaning solutions, etc.), if they publish it. You can send your tips to tiptalk@hfmus.com with Reader Tips in the subject line.

I write for Suite101.com and I love it. I also write for DemandStudios.com and writers.hotelsbycity.net
I tried writing for helium, but I really hated the site. I hated that there were no editors controlling the quality of the articles, so I felt like I was in the stupid-pot. I had a typo for like 3 months and no one ever mentioned it to me.
Between Demand Studios ($15/article x20/wk pd wkly) and HotelsByCity ($5 x however many I want to do pd monthly) I can bring home a fantastic income.
I'd like to be in print magazines, but learning the whole query then write thing is on the backburner because of my immediate financial needs.
Suite101 pays a percentage of the adsense which is actually quite excellent at around $8/1000 visitors since they teach you SEO (which has gotten me other jobs, too)
I also have my blog monetized from payperpost.com and itsmorty.com
I just got the Bella Online Budget Decor Position (so come see me & subscribe to my newsletter!)

I know someone who writes for about.com, and she loves it. She's been with them for more than 10 years now, and has never had a problem with them.
Finding freelance gigs can be difficult, but once you suss out what works for you, you develop your own little writing routine. My favorite way is to find magazines that I like, and approach them via email. I'm not successful all the time, but I'm earning a living as a freelance writer, so something's working!

I'm really glad someone is having a positive experience of about.com - several negative posts in different places put me off even applying. I did hear that they will hire people who are devotees of a particular niche or hobby.

I would totally apply at about.com, even if I didn't make the cut, the monthly stipend is great, and you never know until you try. All of the content you create is yours to keep afterward, so you're really out nothing. The time you spent writing and researching it still yours.
I understand people can be sour about not getting accepted after putting work into it, but they're very clear about the process beforehand. You should check them out before you decide, they post their "wish list" in plain view atBellaOnline ALERT: Raw URLs are not allowed in these forums for security reasons. Please use UBB code. If you don't know how to do UBB code just post here for help - we will help out!

I'm working on a sixth class for www.universalclass.com . I've been happy with the response, advertising and income.

Thanks daisybun, I will have a look at that site.
Don't know about a list but happy to share where I write - my best paying sites are listed on my writing website below.
I started out at Helium (not big earnings, but great learning curve ), moved on through Triond, later - hub pages and associated content. Have settled with the higher-paying ones I write for now below.
