Esp. when they are making certifications for teachers more rigorous all the time. Seems as if there is a disconnect somewhere.

I also know someone who is allowing her daughter to home-school (via an internet school) simply because the daughter didn't want to go to a new school after they moved. She didn't want to "bother" to make new friends - she'd rather drive an hour to hang out with her old friends. I think there should be some compelling reason for home-schooling: to accommodate gifted or special needs kids, religious education, etc. I don't think "bad attitude" should count. IMO, it's an easy way for them to opt out of having to learn social skills and public behavior, discipline, etc. And with all the focus on a single individual, it's easy to see why they become so self-absorbed and self-centered.

One of my coworkers decided to homeschool because she didn't like how fast kids are growing up in the schools her kids were going to, and she wanted her kids to remain kids until they become an appropriate age for certain things. For example, all the girls in her daughter's fourth grade class were obsessed with boys. Not just "Oh he's cute" but "You don't have a boyfriend so you're not cool." And there were so many disruptive kids in her son's class that none of the kids were learning. They sometimes get together with other homeschoolers for field trips and activities.

Yet another reason I don't want kids...even if I am such a great parent that my kids are perfectly behaved and well-educated, I'd still have to deal with other kids that aren't!

Amen to that, sista! And those other kids infect your kid like a fast-acting virus, sometimes to an irreversible extent. eek

*shudder*

Amen two!! I don't think people consider the influence peers have on a kid, so much that it almost supercedes the influence of the parentespecially later on. That is really scary. So many things can go wrong.
