A natural whole food diet rich in whole, fresh fruits and vegetables combined with lots of fiber to slow down carbs turning to sugar in your blood, and as little fast food and processed food as possible is best. Dr. Mark Hyman's Ultra-Metabolism Book is the best I've seen on whole body health. It comes complete with foods to avoid, foods to eat, menus, recipes, and explanations. This diet will work for diabetes, food allergies, helps to eliminate stress, depression, and to lose weight. When your body gets the proper nutrients it needs through good, natural whole foods, and you eliminate the toxins caused by chemicals and processed foods, your body is less stressed making your mind less stressed, and when your body feels better, you naturally are less grouchy.

Diabetes runs in his family, but he never thought he'd be a victim. Bless his heart, he went into denial..he refused to believe it was happening to him.. This is like a bad dream that will never end... Same here! It runs heavy in my dad's side of the family. When my doctor first diagnosed me almost 2 months ago, I was in denial. What made it sink in that yes, I am diabetic was me using my new monitor for a week before and after meals before i started metformin, then taking the pill and monitoring myself then. My bs readings dropped 100 to 150 points from taking the pills. I am noticing I am not as tired as I was and my body doesn't feel icky all the time like it did before.

Jeanette, I have had type II for about 15 years. I have taken metformin, avandia and several other drugs. My sugars have been out of control for quite awhile now. I was taking the maximum dose of metformin you can have. I decided to try eating low carb...limiting my carbs to 30 a day (approx. 10 per meal). It's important not to have all 30 carbs at once. I woke up about a month ago and my sugar was 201!! I had not eaten anything at all. I took my metformin, waited an hour and check my sugar level again and it was still 196! I shouldn't have but I took another metformin (850mg) to try to get my sugar level down. This was on a Sunday. I started the low carb on Monday. When I started the low carb I was taking 3-850 mg. of metformin per day along with 2 additional pills for sugar control (can't remember the name of them). The very first day my sugar level were within normal range! Everyday my sugar levels kept dropping...in fact they were getting to low so I went to see my Dr. I was not taking ANYTHING I have noticed that too. I have been eating low-carb as well. I can't eat any bread at all. No wheat or white bread, no waffels or pancakes, no bagels, no biscuits because I have Celiac disease as well (allergic to gluten). I take Levsin for the IBS. But I have noticed that since I have been eating low carb, I don't need the IBS medication as often. I take 500mg of metformin 2 times a day, one with breakfast, one with dinner. I also walk at least 40 minutes a day in addition to the walking and going up and down the stairs at work all day. I am FINALLY losing wieght. It is slow. Only 13 pounds in 2 months but hey I am losing it and slowly is the best for the body anyways. So as long as you eat lowcarb, you aren't on any diabetic medication??

My triglycerides level was 479 and I've been able to reduce it down to normal levels just through my diet in 2 months. I've not been hungry at all and I feel better than I have in 20 years! Wow! 479? My triglycerides level is like 275 so that combined with the diabetes is dangerous for heart problems. I still keep a little fat in my meals but that is mostly from the meat I eat or from using miracle whip instead of ketchup. Ketchup kills my bs level. Also I have switched from regular peanut butter like Jiff to all natural peanut butter which has some fats in it to but it is good for you. I will have to find that book too.

Fish oil is excellent for reducing triglycerides! And, a host of other issues, too. But, it is vital for heart health. If you don't eat fish several times a week, get supplements. They are not too expensive.
Jeannette, there used to be a low-carb or sugar free ketchup available. In fact, I hope you've been to Lisa's low carb site for recipes & info. While your doc might not want you to go whole-hog low carb (ha-ha), she has some great recipes & suggestions for cutting out sugar and flour and other blood sugar baddies.

Deb, yes I visit Lisa's site a lot especially on Sundays when I go to make the grocery list and go shopping. So this week I am adding fish oil supplements (I have had several people recommend this) and cinnamon pills because there are some days cinnamon just won't go with what is on the menu LOL ANd you are right she doesn't want me to go completely low carb because there are some foods she wants me to keep for the good fats. I am still waiting to hear back for a Diabetic Educator.

All natural peanut butter is good, but have you tried nut butters? They are much better and come in almond, cashew, and macadamia flavors made from the real nuts with all natural ingredients and no hydrogenated oils. Fats you want to cut out are hydrogenated oils, fats from meats and dairy products. Olives and avocados are great sources for "good fats". You do really need to get the Ultra Metabolism book, it will help you with food selections and substitutions greatly, and it's only $17. Well worth it to feel better and be more healthy! I know I'm so glad that I found the book and am very thankful Dr. Mark Hyman took the time to write it.

They are not too expensive. Fish oil is very good for the heart, but unfortunately, most fish these days contain large amounts of mercury which is not a good thing and can cause more damage and outweigh the good stuff like omega3s you get from fish. Wild salmon is good and fish from the Pacific. Almost all Atlantic fish have high mercury content.
