Oz- I am sorry for your loss, it is so sad when they die.

Rusty is doing well. Right now he is sulking in his cup because I did a water change and I am letting the heater work its magic before I put him back in it.

The new tank is still cycling, but I added rocks today.

Rusty is getting new gravel, rocks, and filter on saturday and new friends (neon tetras) on sunday. I hope he likes his new friends!

Is it a bad thing if only one of a bettas gills flares when they flare up? It doesn't happen all the time, but I have noticed it the last few days. Maybe I'm being paranoid lol.

I'm misssing Huie so much I've cleaned the tank and set up the new filter and put the heater and water in. I'll let the water filter for a day or two and go shopping. I'm lonley working without my little buddy wagging his pretty tail at me. I wasn't going to get another fish so soon but I miss him so much I can't work on my photos (I'm a photo retoucher/restorer). I keep looking at the empty tank so I'll have to get another fish or I'll never get all this work done.

Hello Fishwife....he may have an issue with that gill..an infection or something. Try and see if you can see anything in that gill when he flares it.

I had one fish that had a sprung gill like that and it was from PH burn or some kind of issue resulting from me adding Easy balance to his tank instead of water conditioner...at the water conditioner dosage, which was megga too much easy balance ! He survived the experience for about 2 months but eventually succumbed.

Thanks Emg. I'm going to do a water change today anyway, but now I've noticed that the end of his top fin is curling slightly. It doesn't look dark or black or anything, but I'm thinking it definately can't be a good thing. I'm sorry if there is already advice given about this on another thread, but I don't have too much time to spend here today with all the packing to be done. He's eating normally, but does seem a little mopey. I'm wondering if the water change and salt should fix him up, or do I need to treat this with soemthing more? Thanks for any advice, I will try to check back later for your thoughts. This isn't a good time for him to get sick... do fish feel humans' stress?

I wouldn't worry about the curl too much..there is a defect in show bettas that shows up after about a year old where the dorsal fin developes a curl...only someone who actually shows thier bettas would care about that....lol...but keep an eye on it anyway to be sure that's all it is.

Try the warm water and extra salt approach...but do some online research into gill infections and see what you can find out.

Heyhey! I'm back! I had to stay offline because I was waiting for a call back from a job interview... I don't think I got it Yikes! Oh well.
Anyway, I have a new betta. I picked up a crowntail today, I had cleaned the tanks and let them sit for a week, and just kept window shopping at pet stores. lol. So I went with my boyfriend today, to look at tanks, and I ventured over to the betta section (not at Walmart lol) and they had crowntails, deltas, and platinums, and of course the guys you see all the time, and my boyfriend picked out this really colourful crowntail, he's so cool. We decided to take him home [ooh page just finished loading! new emoticons cool!! ]
So his name for now is SpikeKing because he's a crowntail and they're spiky lol. Not very original, but it sounds cool when you say it outloud! lol. I tried taking pictures, but my camera is horrible, I'm going to have to wait for my sister's again. But he's um... a dark flat red I guess, with red, then dark blue, then white and light blue fins, when he flares, his tail fin goes red, light blue, red light blue, it looks awesome! his top fin is blue spotted. He's soo cool. AND!!!!!! He swims around happily!!! I'm so excited!! I'm deciding who to get so he can have friends once I have the 10gl/20gl tank. I'm really happy I didn't give up again.

Eeyore is happy I have a fish again too. But, she hasn't hit the tank yet, so I'm very happy!!

I figured out that the thermometer I had in there originally was broken,(I'm thinking that might be why I lost them ) so I added a new one and we're all good

So what kinds of fish can I add with a betta? My sister told me I can have tetras, and corydoryas, but that's all I remember. Thanks again for all your help guys :D

Does anyone else's bettas flare up when you turn out your lights?? I turned out my bedroom light, and Redfish got so mad about it, he flared up his face and swam around his tank like that... SpikeKing is doing it now too!! I must say, the angry fish face is creepy looking. Lol. Is this something I should be concerned about? Or is it a myth that flaring up too much stresses them?

It's just a coincidence that the light is off right? Don't tell me my fish are afraid of the dark!!

Ah yes...the "make faces at yourself after dark" behavior...lol...Mashi, he's a very happy well adjusted betta, nothing to be concerned about.

I would get some corys to keep him company ! They are such a cute little fish. If you can find the dwarf kind, get a few of them. They do like the company of other corys, so at least two would be good. They come in many varieties too. Look here to see. Corys at Dr Fand S

I forget..what size is the tank ? Otocinclus are good with betta as well, and they eat algae so if/when any crops up in your tank they would be helpful. Oh, corys are helpful cleaners as well...they eat EVERYTHING that falls to the bottom of the tank..sort of like a snail, only cuter (in my opinion ).

He sounds like a way cool betta Mashi, can't wait to see pick of him.
