OK, admit it. How long did you fight with that chocobo race before you finally dodged enough birds and got enough balloons to win it with 0:00 time left?

And didn't it drive you insane while you kept trying over and over?

Some 40 minutes maybe. It's the matter of being precise with contols. I hated the way analog stick controls the chocobo, so I used the regular D-Pad ... And then it was just practicing. I got to 0.6.5, 0.5.0, 0.4.7 and then 0.0.0 by far even, having finished the race in 38 seconds, with 15 baloons and one berdie. But yes, it wasn't the most pleasant challenge in the game.

do you need to get all the balloons to get 0:00?

or you just have to get some? and do you have to

dodge all of the birds to get 0:00?

Once I did, I have repeated the thing twice. You need around 36-39 seconds to finish the race. Each ballon grants you with 3 seconds of time subtraction. You need at least 13 (maybe 12, if you're perfect and lucky) to do it. If you hit the birdies, you need to have a nett positive of 13 balloons, for instance if you're hit twive, you'll need 15 ballons. Use the noraml D-Pad and not the stick and it should be easy enough. Also, luck is important as the balloons layout on the first part of race, the descending path is vital, you can get up to 5 before the big part of the race begins. Sometimes the layout is awful and the trainer gets all the ballons from the path.
