The mom fish to my betta spawn has a steadily growing tumour on her side. She's getting along so far without any sign of distress, but it is getting larger every day it seems. She's had it for about a month now. I have her in a 10 gallon with 3 other females.

I check her out every day...just looking for signs of distress, then I'll seperate her from the others and just wait for the inevitable.

She was a walmart find and has done very well for the year that I have had her...well, almost a year now.

Jilly, I've been trying to get a good picture of her for you "fish illness" article. If I get one I'll send it to you.

Emg, sorry to hear about your female . I hope this is not inappropriate, but a friend of my sister told me recently that she puts her dying fish in the freezer. It slows their metabolism down so that they just go to sleep. Anyway, you may already have heard that and I hope you don't think badly of me for mentioning it. I just wish I'd have known about it with our first betta instead of watching him suffer so.

Oh yeah...I know that method, but she really isn't to that point yet. Still swimming around with the rest of them..doesn't seem to notice yet that there's more of her than there used to be...lol....

Hi emg,
Is that your newly cycled 10g that has the ich? That sucks. If it makes you feel better... I'm in the same boat. Yeah, that 10gallon that I just moved my betta into last weekend. Oh, and you can say I told you so too... I should have waited until the fin rot was completely healed, cuz it came back with a vengeance! I've had to medicate the whole tank... I'm just trying to figure out what I can use that will handle both fin rot and now, ICH! ACK! But yes, it is fun!!!

Now... on the question of euthanasia... I'd heard of the putting in freezer method. But a method that I think I prefer is the putting into almost freezing water. Essentially, put a bowl of water in the freezer until there is a slight film of ice, break the ice, insert fish. Because of the temperature change, it's instant hyperthermia and it's very fast. I just can't bear the idea of putting a fish in a freezer and waiting. Doesn't seem right somehow. But that's just my p.o.v.

My Tanks:
20g - planted - 1 cory, 4 otos, 4 shrimp, 4 swordtails, 2 angelfish
10g - 6 pygmy cories, 3 yamato shrimp, 3 otos

Yeah, my new cycled 10 gallon divided...(sigh)...I moaned about it in a good long post in the "community fish" thread...lol.. If you like listening to whining and crying you can read it...lol.

Yeah, I guess I did tell ya so JP...LOL ! Patience is something that is learned...I'm still not there yet myself..haha.. Like right now I am waiting to get a heater into that 10 gallon that I took out of the 15 cause the danios don't need it. It's still warm from running in there and I want to get that water in the 10 warmed up so I can change the water in the betta's bowls..they look miserable ! But I guess I will have to wait or risk cracking a good heater and having to throw it away.

I'm not even thinking of the euthenasia thing with that female yet. she's still in pretty good shape considering she has this thing sticking out of her side. I'm hoping she just keels over on her own and I find her floating one morning. Probably not though...lol...poor girl.

speaking of euthenasia i read an article about diffrent ways to put a fish down ....well i started crying about the thought(could have been the few drinks i had !!LOL ) of having to do something like to one of mine some of them included putting the fish in a blender that was already on ....putting them in vodka.....smashing the head with a hammer...the freezer one !!! I was like OMG i cant do that !!Emg hope she feels better and when her times comes that it is peaceful and natural its hard to loose them ...good luck!

Sorry, I didn't mean to start something depressing . I guess I should have known that it wasn't anything new for most of you. I agree with Luvly and I hope you get your wish Emg that she doesn't have to suffer.

Well, Rusty was being a downright brat when I got home tonight He was [censored] off because he hadn't been fed since friday thanks to miscommunication and my not being able to get home. So as soon as I got in the door I fed him, but he refused to eat. I did a 95% water change, and put some worms in there and he ate them! He's such a typical male, difficult to the very end j/k. I'm a little concerned that my heater doesnt have the temp back up to where i want it though. Oh well, c'est la vie!
