Even though she has remained somewhat quiet on the issue, I think Oprah could be the one to really shed some light on this topic. I know she has to be careful now but as she grows close to the end of her contract, she can say whatever the hell she wants about the topic. Oprah has a lot of influence and clout. And, if she ever does it, I don't want to hear that "but, I feel like a mother" cr*p she has been peddling since opening the school. I feel like that is a sell-out/safe statement. I think that is insulting to mothers. I would never try to imply that I know what it feels like to be a mother. I know she has opened up that school to help those children, but I would not equate that with motherhood.....whew, I guess I needed to get that off of my chest.

Gosh, folks, I didn't mean to discourage anyone --- definitely, we should lobby Oprah. I just have been a little frustrated with her over the years. If she chose to speak out and spend a little of her ridiculously huge amount of political capital (and speak out herself, not just give people like Cattral a venue for doing so, as useful as that is), it could go a long way.

I love Cattral, but now that you say that, it's kind of funny that she's one of the most outspoken CF celebrities. In many ways, her character on SATC was very un-motherly and self-absorbed...sort of a stereotype of how people seem to characterize the CF person. You just watch her and know this woman is not mother material. I have no idea if she's that way in real life, but it just struck me as kind of ironic that of all people she would be the one who is CF in real life. Too bad Kristin Davis wasn't the one who announced she was CF. That would have been a more powerful statement. No one (in their right mind) would ever go up to Cattral's character and say, "Oh, you should have kids! You'd be such a great mother!"

I love the idea of emailing Oprah. Even if she doesn't do it, it might at least plant the seed. One reason she might not is, have you ever noticed how sad mothers get when you tell them you're CF? It sends them into this tailspin sometimes. I don't think she wants to bring her audience down that much. It doesn't elicit sympathy and they can't relate to it. I wish it was different. It still is very taboo.

I just thought of something regarding Oprah. She was raped by a relative right, and delivered a dead fetus I believe.

I know there are all kinds of reasons why women want to be CF, but I have to say, if that was my childhood, I wouldn't be eager to procreate. There are too many bad memories around childhood for her, there HAVE to be.

It's even ruder for people to bug her about it, because she clearly had a traumatic rape experience, and people know about it! And they are so insensitive that they ask her about having kids. I think someone said a few weeks ago that Madonna said something to Oprah about having kids.
