I agree, I think a lot of parents and perspective parents are in denial about what being a parent really entails. Some parents talk about parenting realistically, the work, the joys ans sorrows, etc and I really enjoy being around them and their kids, but it does seem like a lot of parents are in a fantasy world and, frankly, it is often disasterous for their kids. Not to mention that it's no fun to hang out with either them or their kids! The main reason I choose not to have children is because to me, it's mostly work and little joy, particularly until the kids are old enough to start having a personality. Sorry, but I don't think it's cute when the baby is barfing everywhere. It's not gross, it's just part of being a baby and if you are around a baby you just clean it up, but sorry, there is nothing cute about it.

Crimony. I'm sick with the flu because of my BF's niece. My dogs have never made me sick. They've actually made healthier by being more active.

Who's the unsanitary one???

That "doggie adoringness" is much more special to me than anything a kid could do. Dogs think you are their world, and you don't even have to give them an iPod to get them to think that way! LOL! And they never get tired of being with us, and are grateful for everything we give them. How many people can say that about kids?

Maybe hearing that causes some sort of dopamine surge in parents that helps them forget all the hard times. Parents always seem like they're in denial about reality to me. It makes me feel like a pessimist sometimes that I can't ignore things that parents just gloss over.

I'd rather have my dog lean against me and look up at me adoringly. The happiness that brings me is enough.

No point in trying to get good behavior when it will be de-enforced and your authority undercut.

Well, that's a huge problem, and I think that parents need to stick up for themselves. No one has to be nasty to discipline a child, just saying "don't do that" and removing them from the situation goes a long way. Just in work situations if I have a co-worked undermine my authority, I tell them that that is inappropriate. No parent has the right to tell a child not to listen to his/her parent.

If parents care more about what other parents think about their disciplining skills, then that is a huge problem.

That kind of craziness makes me so mad. The rason kids are so sick if you ask me is because of are overly hygenic surroudning. A friend of mine is a vetrinarian and bring her 17 month old daughter to work with her. The baby crawls on the floor the dogs walk on, has put hair in her mouth and gets licked by dogs and cats. She is probably the healthies child I have ever seen.

I guess the reaction of getting rid of pets because a baby is on the way and the parents don't want the kid around a "dirty" animal is once again proven unfounded! I've never heard of a child dying because of dog or cat hair getting in their mouth. Heck, if dog hair in the mouth was deadly, I'd have been gone long ago! LOL!

Anyone who would get rid of a loved pet because of a kid is unfit to be a parent.

I agree, but I see it far too often as a reason people decide to get rid of their pet. "We just won't have the time to devote to Fluffy that he deserves once our baby is here!" Or: "We can't have our precious baby crawling around on our floors with animal hair on them!"

If the baby is crawling around on the floor, he's going to pick up a lot more than just animal hair....
reminds me of the story of the woman who asks the Doctor if she can stop sterilising her baby's bottles...

"Does the baby crawl?"
yes.
"Does she go in the garden/park/all over the house?"
yes.
"Does she put things in her mouth?"
yes.
"Then lady - you can stop sterilising her bottles!"

Paranoia is a daft thing....!
