That is too precious! Frog and fish making friends.

I'm happy to report that Elijah is currently showing no visible signs of fin rot, aside from the jaggedness until further growth fills it in. But the black/red edging is gone. His tail looks smashing; it's obviously shorter then it used to be, but it looks full and colorful, no stringy, brown pieces hanging anywhere. And there is definite growth happening slowly but surely. His bottom fin finally showed a tiny bit of growth, though slower then the tail. It has always been less jagged then his tail, however, so it doesn't have as far to grow.

Going to keep up with these daily water changes for another week or so, then move to every other day. Hopefully, he'll continue to progress. I don't think I'm going to add any medication of any kind to assist in growth, unless it seems like he's regressing again. Does that seem like a good idea?

Ever the persistent one, there was a fresh bubble nest awaiting my approval this morning The daily water changes are only spurring on his nest-making energies. He's so cute.

Fish LOVE clean water. I guess the equivalent would be if we were trapped for life in a room full of thick cigarette smoke. We'd probably have a frayed immune system too and get sick a lot.

Anyway, Tiff, good work. Don't go to meds since clean water seems to be the answer. Every other day after a week or two should be good, since Eli is healing. Do you have bettafix? That's always good to keep around since it's all-natural.

mel, that is very cute about your frog wrapped up in a fish hug. Wish I could have seen it.

hello all, g;ad everyone seems to be doing well.

I started school and have been very busy.
Three of the bettas i have had fin rot and it looks like it cleared up completely on one of them and sorta on the other two. i was using maracyn two tablets disolved in water to get proper dosing, then i resorted to some erythromycin i had from treating something else in my guppy tank. now im just waiting for the tails to grow and keeping up with water changes. thank you for all of your help.

that is too adorable about the fish hug.

Hello everybody

New betta mom here. I got my betta, Trevor, a couple weeks ago. He's really pretty, with a bluish body and then red fins. So far we've been doing pretty well, working on healing the ends of his fins that were a bit ragged when i got him.

I just had a couple quick questions and I thought I'd get some advice from the experts I have Trevor in a 2 gallon tank with an undergravel filter. So far I've been changing about a quarter of his water every week. Is that too little or too much? Also, I'm currently away at college, and I live about an hour away from home. When I take Trevor home over Winter Break, should I just change part of the water when i get home, or clean out and start the tank over?

Hi guys. Fred's doing fine, but I went to 2 PETCOs yesterday looking for BettaFix just in case, needless to say I didn't find it at either store, but I did see the saddest site. The store had just gotten a shipment of Bettas in and it looked like all of them had fin rot. Of course, now a complete Betta nut, I complained, but the "fish expert" looked at me like ok college kid, go away. So that was really disheartening. If I could fit them in my dorm room, I would have brought some home. I had a question though, what does fin rot look like on their side fins (they are probably called their pectoral fins, but I'm not sure, basically the ones that they swim with)? Fred's look clear on the ends and then red (he's a red betta) closer to his body. Is that normal? I'm pretty sure it's been like that the whole time I've had him, but after seeing those bettas in the store I came home and did a double take. I know a lot of you have experience with fin rot and I was hoping you could help me out.

Also, Fred stopped eating his pellets so I had to revert to flake food (what a picky fish!). I know you should give them about 2-4 pellets a day, but how many flakes??? If I just feed him for a set amount of time he'll eat everything. Should I feed him for a couple of minutes or a set amount of flakes? I'm a bit worried about constipation, but I don't want to starve him either. Thanks a lot.

Trevor is a great name for a betta! Good luck with your new addition.

If Fred has clear on the ends of his fins, that's probably new growth, so that's a good thing.

Elijah continues to do well. He has lots of new growth, and is positively delirious with joy. I've never seen him this energetic and happy

It's great that Elijah's doing so well. I've been reading up on everyone's fish stories and it sounds like you've taken excellent care of him. Good job!

I blew kisses to Fred this morning like I do every morning and he came right up to the front of the tank for his kisses. I'm SO happy!! Hopefully this will be our new routine.

Well...now my gold fella "Gorbash" has tattered fins...funny how that happens..one minute you look at them and they're fine, you check them out later in the day and thier fins are a mess!!

I put him in a bowl and he is floating in his compartment along with Teal on one side..and Comet on the other. I just caught him biting at his tail..I don't know if that is what tattered his tail or his tail is just irritating him because of the redness on it...who knows. I have him in extra salt and bettafix...this is getting tiresome..I may just take all the plants out of that tank and just leave the smooth stone and cave stuff. What a pain! I guess the only way to keep these guys from getting thier fins all messed up is to have absolutely NOTHING in thier tanks!! How BORING would THAT be??!!

Hello everyone!
It's so nice to have everybody here to compare fish stories with Emg, sounds like your guy has decided his tail is pretty tasty. You would think the cave stuff/toys would occupy him enough to leave his tail alone. Sounds like you're doing what needs to be done in order to heal him up.

Fred sounds just adorable! I love it when my fish respond to me by swimming up to the edge of the tank and peering at me through the glass. It's as if they find us as interesting as we find them

Elijah continues to thrive. He's got tons of new growth on his tail, and finally some visible growth on his lower fin. Continues to be no new rot, which I am so relieved to report. I am just changing his water daily and adding a 1/4 teaspoon of aquaium salt. I've been doing this for a week, and am going to continue for at least another week. After that, I may move to every other day. I'm going out of town to a wedding the weekend of Oct 9th, and I'm a little worried about leaving my precious guys But I'm not leaving until Friday morning, and then coming back Sunday night. So, if he's used to the every other day water changes, I think he should be fine. I'll change his water Friday morning, and then again when I come home Sunday night.

sigh...unfortunately, Elijah had a relapse last night. Didn't change anything in his routine, but when I checked on him after work last night, he had a spot missing from his tail, and some little rot patches on his lower fin as well as near the new yucky spot on his tail. I was very discouraged. But I changed his water and added salt as usual, and we'll see how it goes. To look on the bright side, he doesn't look that bad overall, and still has plenty of growth in other areas, but I want this rot GONE.
